I just picked up a Glock 38 from CDNN that I intend on using as my primary CCW. Seeing as if .45 GAP ammo is expensive, does anyone have first hand knowledge of what defense ammo will fire and cycle with reliability?

Every pistol is a little bit different, but a G38 should fire anything you feed it. Some of the better defensive loads out there are the Federal HST(my favorite), and the Winchester Ranger Talon. Stick with the 230gr loads if you can. You don't need to be a LEO to buy it, and you can buy it here:

the ranger t has a little more rounded nose profile.most guns will feed both, but if I were betting there's a better chance of HSTs not running than Rangers.
that said I use HSTs in my 45 acp they were cheaper bought enough to test then stocked up.

www.natchezss.com has an excellent deal on Golden Sabre Bonded 230's. You won't find any premium defensive ammo anywhere cheaper. It's a great bullet loaded in nickle cases with primer and case sealent.
