For a revolver that is chambered in 45 Long Colt can it also shoot a 45 ACP? Does it need to be fitted with moonclips? Reason being is that I have been thinking about getting a Ruger Redhawk chambered in 45 LC.

You'll need to have the cylinder machined to clear moon clips for .45 ACP use. Pinnacle High Performance in PA offers this service and machines the cylinder such that .45 Colt will still headspace properly. I've not used them for any work, but am considering having this done on one of my revolvers.

The Blackhawk convertible 45 LC/ACP comes with 2 cylinders, one for LC and one for ACP. Moon Clips are unusable with a single action pistol as rounds are poked in one at a time through the loading gate and there's no room for a clip on the ammo. The ACP cylinder is chambered like a semi-auto barrel with the cartridge head spacing in the chamber. Since you poke them out with the ejection rod one at a time there's no need for the clips like you find in a Double Acton revolver with a star type extractor as seen on S&W M25's.

I have heard that Ruger will fit an acp cylinder to a blkhk if you can't find a convertible set up.
Unless its changed, Ruger policy is that they will fit a ACP cylinder to a gun that was a convertible model when originally purchased if the owner lost the original extra cylinder. They won't fit a different cartridge cylinder to a pistol that didn't come with one to begin with.

So if you want to fire both types of ammo in a Ruger, buy one that comes with both cylinders from the factory.
