.45 Mil Spec denting cases, help?

My Springfield Mil Spec .45 shoots just fine thank you.

But now that I'm reloading I find that many, if not all the cases, have a fairly large dent in the side of the ejected brass.

I'm assuming that the slide is "pinching" the case as it ejects.

Any ideas on what is happening and how I might fix it with out shipping it off to Springfield? Or is this just something a manufacturer has to deal with?

Howdy Don,

The slide isn't pinching the brass...It's hitting it. Look at the slide
around the port for the "Brass Tracks". Put a little more tension
on the extractor. Easy. Too much and you'll get failure to go to
battery. You can also radius the bottom front corner of the hook just a little to change the angle of ejection some. Just a light radius is all you
want. You can do it with a medium India stone, and polish it with
some 400-grit wet or dry paper using the stone for a flat surface.
Don't get carried away and shorten the hook unless it needs to be a little
shorter. .032 is about right.

Isn't the lowering and flaring of the ejection port also the "other" fix for this? The hitting of brass was one reason I didn't want to get a Mil-Spec... let us know how your adventures in extractor tension works!

If the dent is a "V" shaped dent on the mouth of the case, yep. If it's
on the side, it's getting hit before it can exit the port. You can also
play with the shape of the ejector a little to kick it out at a different angle.
