Flipping through the channels the other night, I came across a segment about the American Idol family murder. The murder weapon was found to be a 45ACP Sig Sauer P220, and one guest (obviously anit-gun) was stating it was a murderers/criminals gun, these are the 'type' of guns most criminals use, good for killing. And then the host started asking about cost and a different guest (possibly pro-gun) says ~$800-900, when asked about PAWN SHOPS, he says depending on model/condition/ect, average ~650-700. I found many new P220 on gunbroker for ~$600, but thats besides the point.

How many criminals are going to buy a $600 firearm, when they could opt for a $175 High Point, or better yet just steal one? Even if they did shell out the money, most likely it would be a GLOCK (G).

Criminals are like any other "business". They minimize costs. They don't purchase quality firearms.

I've been lucky enough to be at the local police supply when they get boxes of surplussed evidence guns in. I helped sort the contents into "trash", "parts guns", "cheap, but serviceable" and "good" the vast majority went into the first two categories and very few went into "good". Criminals just don't waste money on good guns. Every now and then some antique or unique treasure was found (VP70Z, first gen Detective Special, Canadian Inglis BHP), but they were rare.

I saw a snippet of that story and they referred to the Sig 220 as "The Cadillac" of handguns. What? Here's what I'd say:

Sig - The BMW of handguns
HK - The Mercedes of handguns
Beretta - The Fiat of handguns (not quite Ferrari)
Ruger - The Chevrolet of handguns
S&W - The Ford of handguns
Glock - The Dodge of handguns
Springfield - The Jeep of handguns

I don't know, just some random thoughts when comparing big name handgun manufacturers to big name auto manufacturers. Mainly just mental images...

Criminals dont go out of their way to get a particular make or model of gun. This is why quality guns are a rarity in the commission of crime. They use whats easiest and/or cheapest to obtain. As such, thats why you see lots of Lorcin, Jennings, HiPoint, etc.

Glocks and Sigs used in crime are almost always stolen guns. They are highly prized by criminals (particularly gang members), since they're status symbols within that culture. Gang members subscribe to the logical fallacy that if police carry a particular type of gun, it must be the "best". Because of this, they command a premium on the black market, and most cant afford it.

Very good analogy comparo, but I think I would switch the Glock and Springfield around, but other than that, it seems spot on and also the reason its much more rare to see a criminal use a BMW or Mercedes for a get away vehicle then a Ford Taurus.

I don't think so...

Why would a criminal spend $500 to $600 on a gun? It most likely would cut into their crack, heroin, meth drug money.

This was not your normal criminal. He was a family or ex-family member who went nuts against his family. I agree the common street criminal does not use high cost handguns, unless stolen, but this was not a normal situation in any way, shape or form.

Agreed! My take was that he was campaigning that nobody needs a gun like that.

Ahh. Right there you are associating Glock with criminals, just as many people put a negative spin on “Uzi” or “AK47” I’m not a Glock fan but I wouldn’t want to further spread firearm stereotypes.

Maybe he meant handguns.

Clearly if handguns were outlawed they would all be alive today. Where was it? Chicag....oh, nevermind.

It's a horrible tragedy.

Glock = Hyundai

Interesting. Me and my Hyundai keep outshooting my buddy and his Mercedes
