250 gr. 45ACP?

So I made it home from my local reloading supplier and opened a box of Hornady 45 cal HP/XTP bullets I just bought, but they looked different than the 230 gr. bullets I usually get.:scrutiny: I took a closer look at the box and they're 250 gr. bullets (D'oh)!:banghead: I could've sworn the box said 230 at the store...

Anyway, I'd like to load them up for my .45 ACP and see what kind of performance I get if I can find some safe load data for them. The problem is, I cannot find any published loads for 250 gr. 45 ACP in any of my books. I figured the wealth of expertise available here at THR might be able to help... I'd like to use HS 6 powder if possible.

Thanks in advance.

You bought .45 LC bullets.

You can load them with maybe 5.2 grains of Unique, but they won't have enough velocity to open up the HP.
Velocity will be in the 750 FPS range.

I think HS-6 is too fast for that heavy a bullet in .45 ACP.

Speer lists data for their 260gr JHP, you should be able to use their starting loads for your lighter wgt 250 gr. I`d call Speer, or better yet Hornady and see if they have any advice on powders and loads for the bullet.

I have shot a bunch of Ranier 250 Gr. Plated bullets intended for .45 Colt in the .45 ACP with no problems. 5.5 Grs. W-231. Start at 5.2 and work up.

I'd like to use HS 6 powder if possible.

I've got a Midway Loadmap book for .45 ACP.

They list that bullet, and your powder of choice.

(edited to add: which is it, 450 grain or 250 grain?)

Sound like 45-70 bullets, I would have to check, but I believe I use 405gr lead in my trapdoor and those are monsters. I only use 230 in my long colt as well

Handloader Magazine did a full article in April 2006 issue on this. One of the bullets done, is the one you bought. They even went on up to 300gr. on some loads. The article is called " Super Heavy Bullets in the .45 Auto". You might try finding it at their website.

Be advised that in the past I have read that bullets greater than 230 grains in a .45acp will cause alot more stress on your frame. That being said alot of guys around here use 250 grain bullets for pin shoots.
