I have some 500gr hard cast FP and H4895 but can't find any load data. Hodgdon lists a 400gr JFP load starting at 51gr powder. On handloads.org I found a listing for a 405gr LFP 45/70 load starting at 43.2gr powder and listed as a trapdoor load. Reloadersnest.com has a 525LFP over 52gr H4895 and a 550 over 44gr.

Would I be safe starting at 40gr H4895 and working my way up in a Browning BLR? I know there are better powders but this is what I have on hand now.

?? Start at 32.0 gr H4895 -450 Marlin-500gr Bullet ??

http://www.gmdr.com/lever/AD450m500_dat.htm My guess is, start lower than 40gr. The 45-70 lever loads seem to have a higher working pressure than the 450 Marlin. But its had to compare CUP with PSI. Link shows a starting load of 32.0gr. for the 450 Marlin. If you would use the Hodgdon "youth Load" forumla on 450 data, you may have a lower starting load. You should wait for a reply from someone that has loaded the 500gr bullet with H4895. This SAAMI chart http://www.saami.org/specifications_and_information/specifications/Velocity_Pressure_CfR.pdf with the 325gr bullets has close to the same velocity in both 45-70 & 450 Marlin, but the PSI is very different.

A simple email or phone call to Hodgdon to get the proper data or a place to start, would be the smart move at this point.
Your BLR can handle stout loads, but you need to make sure that the throat can handle the 500gr seated length.

Thanks for the advice guys. I have an email into Hodgdon, just waiting on their reply. I have to go out later to get the right size shell holder so I'm going to see if they have any more suitable powders in stock. Maybe pick up some lighter projectiles that have published H4895 data.

I picked up some Speer 400gr jacketed flat points last week and loaded three sets at 51/52/53gr of H4895. Also loaded one set of 500gr hardcast over 35gr H4895 and another set with gas checks added. They all shot fairly well and I'm satisfied with the accuracy of the 500gr gas checked load. Can someone run that through Quick load and see what velocity/energy these loads make?

Shootersnotes.com gives the 500gr load a velocity of almost 1200fps.
