I have a .458 SOCOM rifle, am looking at buying a Marlin 45/70 lever gun this summer, and since both of these weapons use .458 bullets, I was hoping to find a wheel gun (besides a 45/70 BFR or something) that uses .458 bullets so I could minimize my component outlay.
Though I don't reload at the moment, I'm planning on taking Jim Jacobe's class on it this fall and accumulating supplies once I move again.

In general, .458" rifle bullets are going to be a lot heavier & longer then most common .45 caliber handgun bullets. They are also going to be heavier constructed to handle rifle velocity and would not perform well at handgun velocity anyway.

I found a wildcat (.458 Devastator) that used it but it looks like my only real choice is a 45/70 revolver, which does narrow down my footprint considerably.
Thanks for the info.

I've never heard of a 45/70 revolver. Damn, I'm not sure I would want to shoot one either. I shoot my 460 S&W mag which is about 2/3 the size of the 45/70 cartridge and that's about as much pistol as I ever want that close to my face! My Marlin 1895 Cowboy 45/70 is, however, one of my top 5 favorite guns and I reload for that.

I fired a buddy's .45-70 revolver some years ago. The loads were handloads with 300 grain jacketed bullets. Recoil wasn't bad. It is a big, heavy pistol.

Add to the list of possibilities these .458 calibre thumpers ,, not revolvers but real noteworthy .458 long guns ,,,

The .458 African Express
The .458 Win. Mag.
The .458 Lott

There are some others I seem to remember that never really caught on made by the Italians, am thinking was the .458 Italia or something like that . I have had the priveledge of firing the African Exspress made by Remington. It was a unique expieriece being able to see the bullet moving through the air ,,,
