Hey everyone, I messed up and want everyone's opinion. I was reloading some .458 socom and was planning to use 32 gr. of IMR 4198 and accidently grabbed my IMR 4895. I figured it out after 6 rounds and set them to the side. My son was helping me and he grabbed those 6 rounds and put them in a bag with 70 other loaded cartridges. Would they be safe to shoot or do I just need to pull all 70 bullets and dump them to be safe?

I don't know any load data for 4895 and 458 SoCom. You might have to pull down all that ammo.

As you're pulling down, check the powder and see if you can tell the difference. You might be able to separate the powder and find the 6 rounds before going through all 70 rounds.

Worth a shot or see if you can find the burn rate for both. If they're close enough you might be able to shoot them without any problems.

Be safe, check everything.

.458 Socom lover here... Pull it, dump the powder, and start over

.458 Socom got some kick!

IV8888 taught me years ago to only have one powder in the reloading room and leave the powdery bottle in the reloading room so you know exactly what your working with.

Man that sucks. Of the powders listed for 458 on Hogdon’s site, 4895 is much too slow. Could you shoot it? Possibly. It’s going to be a crappy burn and could be you’d end up with a squib. I wouldn’t do it. It’s just not worth the risk.

Just ran it thru quickloads using a 300, 400, and 500gr bullets...Pressures way to low for me to feel comfortable shooting the rounds due to the possible squib as suggested before. If you HAPPENED to be loading a 500gr bullet, it would probably be fine.....cept then your 4198 loads would be pushing something like 60K psi...and compressed by 20% or so lol.

Thanks for the responses! I had a feeling that's what I should do but I wanted some other opinions. I'm having a hard time finding any load data at all for the 458. I'm using a 300gr hp is 32 gr of 4198 a correct load?
