which one any why?

45 Colt (LC) 250gr LFN Cowboy Winchester

45 Auto (ACP) 230gr FMJ Wolf

45 Auto (ACP) 185gr MC Remington UMC

45 Auto (ACP) 185gr GDHP Speer GoldDot

Basic description of grain count , is more "better"

There seems to be alot more options available then when I was active duty and basically told this is what we have, use them.

I understand manufacturers have brand loyal people and I am not about that. I am using this with a taurus 24/7 45ACP as my carry. I know larger than most would consider for CC but My choice. My resasons aside which ammo would you choose and why?

Well, you can't chamber .45LC in a .45ACP, so your first option is out.

I'd also throw out Wolf, simply because I wouldn't trust their stuff for self-defense (until I'd tested a ton of it and set my mind at rest).

That leaves Remington and Speer - and I'd choose either one, as long as it cycles reliably in your firearm. You didn't ask, but another few brands you might consider would be Remington Golden Sabers, Federal Hydra-Shoks and Winchester Rangers.

as mentioned LC is a different cartridge. its a rimmed cartridge almost exclusively used in revolvers.

Some basic things to consider:

.45 ACP was originally designed as a 230 gr FMJ loading at @850 fps. (I have seen other listed velocities but @850 is the most common.) That's relatively heavy and slow for a semi-auto cartridge.

The 185 gr and 200 gr loadings are intended to be higher in velocity, so a hollow point is more likely to expand. There really isn't an advantage to the lighter weights in FMJ, at least in my mind.

I usually carried the old Speer 230 gr +P Gold Dot loading when I could carry a .45. This is now labelled for "short barreled" autos, so I assume the last few boxes I have may be an entirely different loading.

The .45 was first a 200 grain round. The army said it wanted 230, so 230 it was. That said. I like 200 and 230 gr loadings myself. Gold Dots, Golden Sabers and XTP's have all fed well in my 1911's.

I prefer what the gun was designed for and what is the most common. 230 gr ball ammo. It is pretty slow to be sure but it seems to be one of the best knockdown rounds ever developed. Keep in mind that a ounce of lead weights 480 grains so the standard 230 grain .45acp is moving almost a half ounce of copper jacketed lead at 8-900 fps.

When someone gets hit with a .45 they really don't care what weight the bullet is, they all hurt. So, shoot what is dependable, cheap and works well in your pistol.

Speer gold dot but I'd go a little heavier at least the 200 grainers or higher.

They expand well, seem to be top performers even at low velocities and through heavy clothing.

But more importantly as with any ammo, they feed well in my gun.

The 45 Colt LC (Long Colt) not the same as the 45ACP. Used exclusively in revolvers. Certainly not for a 45 ACP auto.

45 Auto (ACP) 230gr FMJ Wolf

The 230 grain full metal jacket is, for the most part, a standard round for the 45 ACP. Wolf ammo is relatively inexpensive, functional, and, in my personal experience shoots dirty. No matter though you just clean your weapon more often.

45 Auto (ACP) 185gr MC Remington UMC

Because the bullet is lighter (than a 230) this round has more muzzle velocity. UMC is also a less expensive round and, in my experience, has been quite good.

45 Auto (ACP) 185gr GDHP Speer GoldDot

Speer Gold Dot ammo is an excellent self defense round. A hollow point in the 185 grain will tend to open up when it hits the target and cause more damage.

Not necessarily! The best performing rounds come from a careful matching of of the round with the gun for optimal performance.

For the Taurus my choice would be the Gold Dot ammo if your goal is self defense.

For self defense? I'd get either Federal HST or Winchester Ranger T's in 230 grain, +P preferably.

i like heavy bullets somewhere in the 200 to 230 range.

i handload and never go outside this simply because my guns are extremely reliable with them.

sometimes with lighter bullets it does not generate enough recoil to reliably blow back hard enough to knock the case off the extractor, even with very high powder charges.

plus i just like heavy bullets.

with 230 g ammo, if your gun breaks you could still maybe defend yourself throwing them at the bad guys, lol.

if it reliably loads in your pistol, that's the one to use.. .45 ACP is getting very expensive, and it's not a bad thing to consider lower cost ammo, so long as it's reliable..

i really don't think it will make much of a difference which loading you use.. as long as the next round is in the chamber when you need it..

with all of that said, i have 160GN Corbon DPX in my XD45acp Service (4")..
