45ACP AND 45ACP TAP

Guys I dont wanna sound like an idiot, but im trying to figure out what the difference is between a .45ACP round and a .45ACP Tap round is..reason is Ive been buying Hornady ammo which I like quite a lot but for my Taurus PT145 they only have th .45 ACP 200gr TAP-FPD and the .45ACP 185gr Hollow point/xtp..trying to figure which is better for my gun..

TAP is going to have higher MV generally.

For example, standard Hornady 200gr XTP has a claimed MV of 900fps

The same bullet in TAP claims 1055fps

It's just different loadings for different purposes, both .45ACP.

If you NEED that muzzle velocity fine, but that's not a whole lot of difference.

"TAP" is a commercial line of ammo produced by Hornady. IIRC, it means Tactical Application Police, or something like that. They make TAP rounds for several cartriges, including .223 and .308.

"ACP" means "Automatic Colt Pistol," and refers to some rounds originally introduced for Colt semiautos back in the early 20th C. E.g., .25 ACP, .32 ACP, .380 ACP, and .45 ACP.

So, if Hornady makes a .45 ACP TAP round, it's just a .45 ACP loading from the TAP line.

TAP is a cool looking ammo, but I don't know how much more effective the stuff is compared to regular ammo. For your gun, shoot whatever you want. The TAP is just some new "Police" and "Tacticool" ammo.

"Tactical Application Police".....It's nothing more than just frangible ammo and in the .308 it dosen't shoot any better than 1/2 MOA.

They make "TAP" all the way from smaller handgun ammo to larger rifle ammo.

Personally in ANY situation I'd rather have something other than TAP....Federal Gold Medal match in .308 and Corbon PowRball in handgun would do far better imo.

Ok thats what I wanted to find out bottom line...the TAP ammo is comparable to the +p ammo then, I pressume..and if it is would my Taurus pt145 be compatible to this TAP or for that matter +P ammo...I cant find any info that leads me to that conclusion..

I don't think I'd use it at a range that required frangible.

Well, that's not exactly correct. Hornady doesn't claim it to be, but there have been some articles written that describe it that way, in .308 in particular.
It's certainly more frangible than an FMJ......

I don't think I would classify all TAP as frangible though but I guess that's arguable..

It don't think it is +P pressure. Their web page has +P .45 in a different location, and I don't remember any markings on the few I've shot. The box isn't marked +P either.

I use a lot of the rifle TAP.

Well, I can't see any reason not to, if you shoot standard Hornady ammo.

TAP isn't marked +p in .45ACP so I can't imagine any reason it would be a problem compared to any other 200gr .45ACP round you'd buy.

Just don't like it too much, it will cost you an arm and a leg.
