45acp question

I have fed my Ruger CMD a couple of mags of SWC's. It wasn't perfect.

I will note that I have an EGW raised mag catch, this raises the mag .04 or so.

The only sure way to find out is to try it in YOUR GUN.

Probably some will.
And some won't.

I'm wanting to load some 150-160,180-185, and 200 and want to feed nicely. So round nose or go home?

My SW 1911 doesn't particularly like swc, but it loves hornady xtp's or any other tc type bullet. I'm sure it would love rnfp also, just haven't come across them in 45 yet.

Lots of good choices other than swc.

I was able to get some xtreme bullets 200g CP-SWC to feed very reliably in my Kimber CDP but i did need to find just the right OAL for it to work that way. The same OAL will not feed in my SA Micro Combat so you will probably have to adjust your load to see if it will operate reliability in your gun.

what typhun said the first I reloaded were hornadyxtp swc. really had to work at it but made them work fine w/hiskor800. s&w 1911. figured my glock would eat them also, nope! you can makem work good luck. sorry on typing (surgery)

OAL is going to be the key to get a good cycle in the Ruger 1911 and they should feed fine in the Glock but I would use an aftermarket barrel in it.

I have shot many 200gr SWC's in a 1911 with no FTF. Do a plunk to set OAL in a dummy round see if it cycles fine from the magazine to chamber and ejection. Note: hand cycle slowly and Just pay attention when it chambers that it does so somewhat smoothly without having to force the slide forward. If you succeed to this point you should be good to go.

I could not get my Gen3 G21 or G30 to reliably feed/extract lead 200 gr SWC bullets. I tried different OALs and taper crimp and was not able to get 100% reliability. They were replaced with M&P45/Taurus MilPro PT145 which feed/extract various brand lead 185/200 gr SWC bullets without issue.

I do not have experience with Ruger 1911 so I can't comment but my Sig 1911 XO will reliably feed/extract various lead 185/200 gr SWC bullets but due to quick start of rifling with almost no leade, I must load them short (1.245" for 200 gr SWC) with shoulder barely above the case mouth. A friend's RIA 1911 Tactical with generous tapered chamber will feed anything, even sloppy 185/200 gr SWC reloads that won't fully chamber in my Sig barrel.

Having shot the H&G #68 SWC for years in my 1911, these shapes CAN be very reliable. As has been said, they must be reloaded correctly and tested in YOUR gun (don't load up a couple of thousand rounds, only to find out they won't feed). With those hard-cast #68s, the key was to leave about 1/32 inch of lead showing above the case mouth*, and of course a good taper crimp. These loads were very reliable and super accurate with 5.3 gr. of 231.

*OAL, in this case, was not the critical factor, it was that little bit of lead sticking up out of the case.

Every company that makes a "SWC" uses a slightly different profile. Unfortuantely, the answer is a definate "maybe". Loading a few and adjusting the seating depth will tell you what you need to know.
