Recently got in some 230gr plated hollow points from Ranier. The powders I have in stock are Unique and Red Dot. I used 230gr lead data from my Lee manual which states the following.

StartingPowder MaxPowder Min OAL PowderType
4.5 gr 5.1gr 1.27 Red Dot
5.1 gr 5.8gr 1.27 Unique

I loaded up 5 rounds of Red Dot at 4.8 grains and they all worked fine, however, the min OAL of 1.27 is a little long for my taste. I don't have a chrono as of yet, so was wondering if anyone had a recipe they use for this combination of bullet/powders?

Also, if you don't have a recipe for this combo please don't reply.

No, but 1.275" is MAX OAL for any bullet design in the .45 ACP to insure they will fit in the magazine.

Your taste has nothing to do with anything.

Do the 'Plunk Test' in your barrels chamber to determine what MAX OAL with that bullet design will work in your guns chamber.

I would suspect it will be less then the SAAMI MAX length shown in your Lee reprint manual with an unknown brand and bullet design..

5.3 grn Unique with my 230 grn plated round nose from Barry's works great. OAL is around 1.232 from memory.

Sorry my bad, I just noticed you were using plated HP's....got nothing for that one.
