.45ACP small primer

The only test I bothered to read (I inspect all my brass so a small primed 45 cas is not a problem for me) mentioned less than 25 fps difference with small primed 45 ACPs being slower. But I figger such a small difference could be in the primers themselves or the sun in a different place, wind from another direction, or the shooter holding his tongue on the other side of his mouth...

I would also think the difference could vary based on what flavor of SP and LP primers. Milder Sp and hot LP more difference hot SP and mild LP less difference.
I have seen 10 -20 fps difference in the same size of primer depending on brand.
(for example WIN LP seem to be a bit hotter than CCI or S+B)

If you need to make PF then you need to chrono you loads.
A different lot of powder or primers could make 10 or 15fps difference if you are right on the edge.

2 or so years ago i emailed federal about it. Their reply at the time was that only walmart would carry tge spp 45s. I now see them everywhere. They also stated that it was an EPA thing. Bla bla bla. I destroy them when i find them to keep them out of the secondary market. I sell alot of brass and never keep spp 45. Its just an inconvenience. Sure it works the same, but will goober up your process if your not careful. Best regards

Just because you don't like it doesn't mean others can't use it. Some people prefer Small Pistol Primed .45 acp brass, since it may be the only caliber they load that normally takes Large Pistol Primers. By using brass that all takes one size primer, it simplifies the supply side of their hobby.

Destroying good reloadable brass is just plain wasteful. I also sell brass, and I've had customers specifically ask for Small Pistol Primed .45 acp brass. I just sort it out and when I've got enough to either load or sell, it's there.

Hope this helps.

I agree with Fred.

I haven't seen enough of it to make a difference, but the few I see are tossed in a separate box. One day it may be enough to do something with.

jmorris designed a super way to sort it out using the press.

Until I start marking my cases, I can't tell my .45acp cases from some that someone else has left. I consider it an annoyance, and requires additional sorting. If I am inspecting many cases, I can get in a groove and identify/segregate them, but these eyes will be 60 y.o in a couple month, and it ain't getting any easier.

I put the offenders in a plastic bag until I get enough to be worth the effort, and then I try to find someone to give them to. If I am unable, I might take some comfort in smashing the stupid things with a hammer. Thanks for the inspiration.

If someone loads 9mm, .40, and 45, maybe .38/.357, then having all SPP cases is great. Since I also load 10mm, .41 Mag and .45LC, it's just a pain in the arse and I'd rather not deal with it.

The fact that .45acp is the only case that has this issue (to the best of my knowledge) and that .45acp comprises about 50% of my total loading/shooting...this is a serious issue for me.

If you're just going to give them away, I'll pay postage to ship them to me.

Quite a few will fit into a small USPS Flat Rate box...or even a medium ;)

Off thread but..
Easy to mark cases, just use a sharpie on the bottom. takes 5 seconds one they are in a ammo box.
I purchased a pack of 8 different color sharpies to mark different loads for testing orange 4.2gr, purple 4.4gr, green 4.6gr etc.
They stay marked pretty well and the sharpie mark comes off when tumbling.
Mark SP one color LP another color, odds are if it's not yours it probably is not marked.
Quicker to sort then.

If you don't like the SP do someone a favor and save it until you get a SFRB then PIF it.
