45series 70 extractor.

hd extractor ser 70 .45 no cut for fp stop. My colt 45 is a colt gov. mod. mk iv/series 70 can I use this? I feel bad about returning something I orderd,
its on me. My fault its not similar don't look the same and im new to .45 and tweaking them but learning. And EGW is my go to. Any help would be apprc. . instruction manual dated 1978/was nib. Thank you John.

Not easily, unless you have a way to accurately cut the slot. Better to swap for one with the slot already cut for the average guy. The reason the no sot extractor is offered is that the many different manufacturers can't seem to hold to the specs on parts, resulting in an extractor hook that is too far forward of the breech face. Pros and experienced amateurs can cut their own slot on a mill to properly position the hook. The original blueprints call for .075" + .010" ( .075"-.085"). Many come through at .095" or more. Some of the pros building bullseye pistols go a bit less at .068". I try to build all of mine dead on spec (.075"). Any of them will give great service. All will need to be properly tensioned for your gun and may need to have the locating pad fit to set deflection and the head blended to match the slide rear profile. All normal 1911 stuff, i.e. NO DROP IN PARTS!

Ok. a gun smith is hard to find in these parts. Wouldn't be back home. But now this being home I will have work to do! As im saving/replacing stock parts. I have one option and its hours away Mr.B. . What im not wanting to do is put a slight bend in the stock part as there is a tool for it from what I understand. what it is doing is after several rounds grabbing and not chambering the next w/the spent shell casing in front of it were I have to drop the clip and action forward to release the live round next to be chamberd.

Bending the extractor to get proper tension is standard tuning practice for 1911 and any other firearm with an internal extractor that acts as its own spring. The tool is nice (made by Jack Wiegand, I have one), but not absolutely necessary. Simply reverse the extractor in its hole with the head of the extractor in the hole and the hook pointed back at you. bend gently with your hand towards the direction that the hook is pointing to increase tension and the other way to reduce tension. That was the old military armorer's way of doing it forever until the advent of the neat little tool.
If the extractor has too much tension (or a sharp transition/bad hook profile) it can prevent feeding. The recoil spring and the mag spring simply will not have enough strength to overcome the hook tension. If it doesn't have enough tension (and/or a worn/misshapen hook) the hook can slip off the spent round, leaving it in the chamber and prevent feeding of the next round. Since you want to tackle this yourself I recommend purchase of "The Colt .45 Automatic: A Shop Manual, Vol 1 by Jerry Kuhnhausen" - http://wwww.gunbooks.com/colt45.html . It is a great benchtop reference. Also, consider joining the 1911 Forum - https://forums.1911forum.com/ , a great forum with a sub-forum dedicated to Gunsmithing and Troubleshooting the 1911. A wealth of info there to be had from quite a few knowledgeable folks who specialize in the 1911. There are a couple really good 1911 smiths in TN. I will look up their names and get back to you on that.

Mr. Bbb. I had amazon send the .45 colt shop manual/by Jerry/wrong one think more for the series 80 w/f.p. stop as I wanted the 10th. but what a good read and terminology for gunsmithing in my long winded way. I have to start going threw it and cant put it down. they have the tweeking on the extractor and is machining from w/ive read in 3 ways as you probably know. The colt 45 auto book I shows the 3 points that need tending to. rolling back on previous posts what would be the best choice in you opinion for an extractor you were telling me about. The brass I re-load could be a big factor. factory did well the first 20 rnds. from a nib. . not have tool and die would you say next would be gun and run for a ways for G. Smith. Thanks John

If yours has the cover as shown in this link - http://wwww.gunbooks.com/colt45.html it is the correct one and will cover GI, commercial pre - Series 70, Series 70, and Series 80 guns.
At one of the three that I linked in my first reply will get you a quality useable extractor. Probably the easiest one for you to fit will be the Wilson. The EGW HD is more for the guy with some experience.The only thing left is some minor tuning. The book should guide you through that part. Easy does it as a little goes a long way. Once you get the extractor in hand sit down with it, a magnifying glass, and the book and study it for a while. Ask any further questions here as you come across any unclear points.

Thanks again Mr. Bill! It is the first edition copy rited 86/87/88. Very cool! I have also contacted and old/gun smith/owner HUMBOLDT TN. that had worked on my fathers berretta for arm piece solder work 12 g. silver hawk edtion. Hey a big thanks for sure! And am I learning never to old!

One question please? chambering a full clip and same problem happens w/rounds while ejecting all the rounds. It jams. same symptom. I know the series 70 has a small ejection port and am no gun smith. problem was a small dent to front of barrel was told. Had it taken care of re blued noticed the barrel was greased heavly /cool when I asked if the ejector was tuned tweaked don't no if my description was followed threw. Don't care as I want this little gem up and running was 55.00$ for the work No big deal at all.

Up-date. went w/a new 14 p. spring (Wolf spring kit as friend suggested earlier in this thread) ! As I kept the stock s. in the gun when it went in for work. w/facto/armscor 230gr. fmj a hotter load it emptied 2 clips no problem and not on top of head w/no jams. I was reloading @ around 960fps. . The throat was polished/lil. nick worked and then re-blued. W help from my friends @ EGW new b. bushing to the to shed the problem of having broke off pedal. Now more use/break n. . Thanks fellas!
