460 S&W crimp help

Went shooting today. I used 300g XTPs and 300g gold dots with 38g of H110. I started with a light crimp, then went to a heavier crimp and then to the heaviest crimp a could get with the FCD. Every bullet still jumped crimp. I am still a bit frustrated. The worst jump was with the light crimp at .020" and the best was with the heavy crimp jumping at .007".

Strongbad They're only jumping to the bottom of the cannelure, correct?

That is how it appears. I am seating the bullet for the case to be at the top of the cannelure. I am going to seat ten bullets in the middle of the cannelure with no neck flare. Five will be crimped with redding and five with lee. We will see what happens. I will use the same load.If i can get them to only move the .002" like before, I will be happy.

As you should be. .002 is nothing. As long as they just move that much and stop, while not being anywhere close to tying up the revolver, you do not have a problem, as I posted way back when. Too bad the FCD did not do better for you.

This is very odd. I shoot my 460 quite a bit with 300gr XTP-Mags and crimp with a Lee FCD. I get zero jump (or at least zero with the naked eye). Could it be something odd like having case lube on the inside that's reducing crimp friction? Also, make sure your bullets are XTP-MAGs and not regular XTPs. I know these ideas might sound stupid but I just can't imagine what else could contribute to this problem.

Pushing too hard on the caliper can make .001 difference easily, and .002 difference is not beyond doing. .002 is really tiny unless you are fitting bearings or something.

Well, I was using hornady one shot on the outside of the case. Not in the case mouth, but i guess over spray is very possible. This time around, i lubed the inside of the die with one shot. The test will be friday. Hope they dont move.

Very true. I feel that .010" is un-acceptable though. So, i will be happy if they only move a thousandth or two.

Thanks again guys.
