Hi guys,

I've been reloading for quite a few years now but I have a question about a load I'm trying out for my .45-70. The problem load is with some 350gn interlocks from Hornady. I'm using H4895 behind it and starting with the low end as usual. I have to seat them to an OAL of 2.493" just off the lands however the Lee book gives me a min. of 2.540". I just can't close the action with the bullet seated to the depth that the Lee manual prescribes. This is in a Ruger #1 if that helps.

Thanks!

That's odd. I have the Hornady 4th ed, and they state COL - 2.550", for the 350gr in the Ruger.

No load data for H4895 though.

Seat them where required to close the #1's action. That may mean no crimping
(since Hornady specifies an OAL associated w/ its crimp groove). But with a
single-shot/seated to the lands, who cares? ;)

I think you will get more consistent results if you use the crimp groove to determine oal. the extra grip the crimp provide really helps

The very best thing you will ever do for yourself when reloading is to measure your rifles chamber. They are all different. I have owned several #1's and it is common to find slightly shorter throated chambers than spec. I discovered this when in the first few months of learning to reload, I stuffed some very hot .243's right into the lands on my #1. It ruined the brass. But no harm otherwise.

The action is very strong so you can move the bullet right into the lands and the #1 will give you great results. I set mine to be just off the lands except with Bergers which I put into the lands a bit.

over time the throat dimensions have changed in the Ruger #1 45-70. it used to be that according to an old Speer manual you could use the lower of the two crimp grooves in their 400 grain soft point. I'm glad I checked before going to the range as that oal was too long for my rifle.
