Hi. Does anybody know a source of this ammo that does not use a mild steel ( or any steel ) in the bullet's core ? The indoor range closest to my house prohibits the use of steel-core bullets for rifles. Thanks.

I wasn't aware that the commercially loaded ammo had a steel core.

Hard to find . . .

I did a little bit of research on the web on the AK-74 and the three or four places that I read all mention the design of the 5.45 x 39 mm round incorporates the mild-steel core to enhance the tumbling effect of the projectile when contacting soft targets ( like human tissue ! ). So, I might never be able to shoot this particular rifle at an indoor range. Maybe somebody in here that knows about handloading can clarify this more, I hope. I was planning on using the rifle at TR in Oregon next year, but they have a lead-free range, and TTI does not offer my caliber. Gonna have to use the heavy SOCOM, or the M4 unless one of you guys hands me an idea !

There was some commercial HP a bit ago, steel case with an RWS .215 headstamp. That may be what you need, if you can find some.

Dang !

So, should I maybe NOT fire the rifle at all and return it to trade for a 7.62, or is there plenty of the normal stuff around ?

Don't return the rifle. There is plenty of 5.45 around, but it will all be steel core. If indoor ranges don't allow it, shoot it at outdoor ranges. You will live the 5.45 round. Little recoil, flat shooting and more accurate than the 7.62.

Excellent !

Thanks for the advice ! I live the rifle's balance and looks, but I was really concerned about the future availability of quality ammo and magazines. No big loss on not being allowed in the indoor range, as it is only a 25 yd. deal. I feel almost like a sinner when I shoot my military rifles there ! You made my day. I'm loading my new rifle in the truck and I'm going to shoot it today !

I'm pretty sure all the new wolf and barnaul out there is NOT steel core.

I dont know if Russia would export it or not, but the atf probably wouldnt let it in anyway. There are 5.45 pistols out there now too, so steel core 5.45 ammo would be affected just like steel core 7.62 was.
