I've got a co-worker that is hard up for some cash and asked if i want to buy a few guns. The only one he has I'd be interested in is a ak-47 in 5.45x39 with synthetic furniture. I forgot to ask the brand but he is asking $600 and says its basically in new unfired condition with 160 rounds with it. It seems like most ak's I see are fairly cheap and $600 sounds high. Without knowing the brand yet, what do you guys think? Is that pretty high for most ak's? Ill ask him next week what the brand is. I am familiar with AR's but not Ak's yet. Thanks guys.

If it's a Century Arms then yes it's too high. My Interarms AK 74 cost me $540 and was worth it.

By the way, the AK 74 fires 5.45 x 39 while the AK 47 fires the 7.62 x 39. Just thought I would also clear that up for you. :)

If its an Arsenal SGL or SLR: Buy it in an instance or give him my number and I'll buy it :)
If its a Waffen Werks: Ehh... try to negotiate it down a bit. Those cost $600 new.
If its an Interarms: Too high.
If its a Century: Waay too high.
If its a Converted Saiga: Ehh...depends on what he has on it. Probably too much.

160 rounds of ammunition is nothing to be honest. You can pick up 2160 for under 300 dollars.

AKs are like 1911s: You need to know who made it to determine it's worth. Regardless, AKs are not as "cheap" as they once were, and, IMO, still should be. Ignore the ammo as price impact is minimal. Please report back when you know the brand and model.

Okay that should help. We won't be back to work for a week or two (road construction in MN) so ill find out what brand then. I do remember he said its Russian. Thanks guys. And thank you cal-gun fan for the list, that should help determine the value somewhat.

And if i do pick this up is there a certain brand of ammo you guys suggest, or I should avoid? I'm familiar with many rounds and brands ect. Just not 5.45x39

If it's actually Russian, which would probably mean an Arsenal, then $600 is a good price. If it's an unconverted Saiga (the other type of Russian "AK") then it's way overpriced. Since you said it's 5.45x39 that makes it an AK 74 variant and those are more expensive in general. Although as others have said his price may still be too high. I'd ignore the ammo part, it's worth maybe an extra $20-$30. Not really a big deal.

Just buy Russian surplus 7n6. You can pick it up online for about $130 for a 1,080 round "spam" can and the stuff shoots well. It is corrosive though so you do need to clean your rifle after every range trip. Not really a big deal IMO.

Okay I talked to him today and he said the brand of the ak-74 is Hesse and its Russian. I've never heard of Hesse, any opinions? Is it worth $600 as a NIB unfired AK? Thanks

Hesse or Vulcan, same differance.
Not a good reputation in the AK world.

It would be worth about half the $600 asking price, if it works.

It may just be a Saiga imported by Hesse. I have one and it is just as good as any other Saiga.

If it is roadchoad then 600 is way too much for it. If the monkeys at Hesse screwed with it its worth less than the century monkey jobs in my opinion.

$600 is what should be asked for a nice AK built to strict standards. Whatever you do, don't look in a gun store- you'd have a sticker shock heart attack.

Before Hesse got into "building things poorly",they did turn out
well done Saiga conversions. I have a couple friends with a few of them, and
the work is better then most of the converted saiga on the market now.

What I am saying is, they imported stock configuration saiga rifles. Mine was converted by a local gunshop. Only thing Hesse could have screwed up was putting their import mark on it. Mine runs great.

Hesse, Vulcan, Blackthorn, or whatever they call themselves now, has never had a good reputation in any world!

Sure, if its unconverted, If they converted it and you are happy with it, I'd wager you got lucky, even a blind pig finds and acorn form time to time.

From a questionable maker, if you don't really know your guns, I'd suggest you shoot it first and only buy it after function has proven satisfactory.

I've got a fair number of Century guns, but I generally have looked at four or six before finding the one I'm willing to bring home.
