Unfathomable? Nope. Illegal? Highly. Unlikely? Definitely.

Uh, OK. Just one thing, though.....Whether knowingly or not, one party in a courtroom (at least in criminal proceedings) is ALWAYS lying. Otherwise, it wouldn't be in court. It may be the prosecution accusing someone of something they didn't do, or it may be the defendant, saying he/she didn't do what they, in fact, did.

If both parties are telling the truth, it's called a confession, and there is no need to swear on the bible.

A $1600 budget for an accurate AR? Skip the DPMS, for that kind of money you can build something real special.

Check out the Larue Tactical 20" Stealth complete upper ($1200). Combine that with a LMT complete lower assembly ($330-550).

I haven't seen any AR outshoot the one lonely 16" Stealth at our local ranges.

Point taken MachIVshooter. The point I was trying to make, however, was that generally speaking, Texan's don't throw out words like that lightly. At least, not in my experience. Now, we can debate the issue ad nauseum, or, leave the semantics to lawerly types and move on with my obviously less than acceptable analogy.

Which leads me to...damn fine shooting. If he was lying, it's on him now.

I would suggest taking a look at colt-specifically the 6601.

$1200 buys you the gun, and another $250 buys you an a3 upper, good rings, and a free float kit, and the scope is up to you. I have seriously considered doing this (less the free float kit-mine is already free floated), and putting a redfield on top of it. that is roughly $1600, and the resale value is pretty high cause of the prancing pony on the side

I'm in the market for a AR to fill a similar role.

My budget is a little less than yours, but if I had $1600 to spare, I wouldn't even buy a production SPR. If you aren't able to do assemble it yourself, get quality parts from reputable manufacturers and let some one else put it together.

The areas on which I would concentrate are barrels, BCG, and trigger. It goes without saying that you'll need to free float the barrel. Grips, stocks, and stuff that is hung from the rail are subjective so no need to go into that.

For my budget and needs, I'm building on a RRA 2-stage LPK, Sabre Defense 1/7 20" barrel mated to a LMT upper receiver, and a BCM bolt carrier group. No glass, FH, or bipod -- I prefer the A3 removable handle, a good sling, and a compensator for this rifle.

If I had the money and the time, perhaps the barrel would be semi-custom, and I'd love to drop a Timney in there, but the SDI barrel is more than capable of performing in the role I have in mind for this rifle, and the RRA 2-stage will do for now too. It isn't meant to be a bench rest stick or anything.

Which ever way you go -- good luck with your search. BTW, that 6601 Colt is a good way to go to build up a decent DMR.

1. Go pick up any 5.56 lower

2. Drop in all the lower parts except the FCG.

3. Drop in a KAC trigger assembly.

4. Go buy a preassembled A3 upper in DCM configuration (20" 1X8 SS barrel), pull the handgaurds and have a Daniel Defense free float tactical hanguard installed. Krylon the barrel with BBQ paint.

5. Install a Leopold scope or an ACOG and POOF! SDM/DMR rifle, almost exactly to AMU spec.

I would thing a 20" A4 Hbar would be in order for what you want.

And affordable.

I shoot 10 for 10 clays at 300 yards using this set up.. I still need to put this gun on paper though.

I would not hesitate to use this rifle for SHTF and Ground Pig shootin' either.

With the ranges you are looking at, I really do not see much of a need to go with a .223 chamber or even free float the darn thing...

I'm running a 20" YHM diamond fluted barrel with a Miculeck(sp?) brake. Spikes upper. Giselle SSA trigger(I love this trigger). Magpil Miad. A.R.M.S. Flip ups front (the one that looks like A2 when open)and rear. VTAC freefloat. A2 stock. Throw in some 20 round PMAGS for good measure.

The fluted barrel helps balance the rifle. I think a PRS will balance it out nicely for field positions.

I have shot one 5 shot hole at 50 yards with the irons.................once. For the most part its 1"-2".

Things I need for it: Magpul PRS and finding the right scope. I havent made up my mind yet. I'm leaning towards the Leupold AR scope 3X9 with mildot.

I would normally agree with the group regarding the 20" barrel but the OP did state most shots would not go beyond 200 yards. I am in a similar position with regards to ranges 300 on a very rare occasion. To the point, my first AR was (still have it) is a DPMS Low Pro Classic with 16" bull (non chromed) barrel, flat side receiver without forward assist. I free floated it with a Hogue free float kit and grip. Other than that the only adage was a bipod and a Tasco 2.5X10 Varmint scope with Millet rings. I had all intentions of getting a more expensive optic later on down the road but so far I have not need it. The trigger has always bee a sweet one on its own, no work there.

This rifle with shoot MOA with M193 and better with good handloads. I have never shot match ammo out of it but consider my reloading skills to be good enough that it should be close at least. For a total investment of around $650 I have basically a nice DMR, carbine length accurate rifle that can shoot with quite a few more expensive rifles. Mine has been perfectly reliable and will shoot some loads that my other AR's won't. Ideal for the 200 yards the OP described, a good accurate, cost effective plinker that you could press into service if need be. JMHO Bill

To Roadwild17,

Sir, you'll fine the DPMS SASS to be a nice, not great, but nice shooting rifle and able to perform reasonably well withing the range limitations you've mentioned.

However... that rifle is a plain old pain in the ass to lug around in the weeds. It's VERY barrel heavy due to it's fluted bull barrel/tube/bipod setup.

Are you building/wanted a weapon you can lug around all day or a range only rifle? I have both the SASS in .308 and 5.56 in my collection and like them both. BUT,,, I'd never want to have to tote one of them over hill and dale unless I could hire a "gun bearer". (grins)
