This is a few months old, but it was news to me as of this morning. Pardon this little bit of activism.
A gun maker supports the rest of us.
Barrett Firearms Manufacturing, Inc. owner, Ronnie Barrett did a rare
thing in the firearms manufacturing world (or for any sector, for that
matter). He told anti-gun politicians and police agencies to stick it,
and he's backing it with his wallet. He has told them if the individual
agency or political jurisdiction does not support the right to keep and
bear arms, he will not sell to, nor repair firearms from, that city,
county, or state. He did this after testifying and listening at a City
of Los Angeles city council meeting where he heard emotional lie after
emotional lie being taken as fact, and the .50 BMG being banned in that
city.
As a result, Ronnie Barrett wrote a letter to the City of Los Angeles
which said, in part,
"I will not sell, nor service, my rifles to those seeking to infringe
upon the Constitution and the crystal clear rights it affords individual
to own firearms."
Although he wrote this letter in December of 2002, I didn't know
anything about it since I hadn't seriously considered buying a .50 BMG
rifle. However, a few days ago after reading that our troops in
Afghanistan had found that typical enemy engagements were fought at
1,500 meters, air support was unreliable, most enemy casualties were
taken with portable mortars, and snipers found their .308 caliber
precision rifles next to useless at these ranges and so had been
scrounging for .50BMG rifles instead, I have decided that my next rifle
would be a .50BMG. I had thought that the price of the Wind Runner
http://www.edmarms.com/products.htm would be in my price range. Another
desirable rifle from Barrett, http://www.barrettrifles.com/ was the
industry leader, but was more expensive.
After reading this letter today, found at the Barrett web page,
http://www.barrettrifles.com/news.html I may just have to reward his
support of us, by supporting him, his company, his employees, his
product, and our rights. It will take me longer to save up for his
rifle. But save I will.
Not many of us can afford the thousands of dollars it takes to by a .50
BMG, let alone a top of the line Barrett. But perhaps you can take the
time to write Ronnie as a show of support. You can also cc the LA PD as
well. Of course, if you were to split the cost of a .50 BMG with a
friend, the shock to your wallet, and your shoulder, would be much
easier to bear.
