OK, so we can shoot a .45 Schofield round in the replicas sold by Taylor's (I think that is the right company). But that is too whimpy a round. I'd prefer to shoot something very close in bore size and energy to the .56 Spencer rounds, and we know the length is critical because the design can't take long cartridges.

I have the answer. A cut-down .500 Magnum case, with two loads worked up. One in blackpowder, one in smokeless, both to get about the same "oomph" as the original Spencer round. You may call it the ".50 Bart" in my honor.

Spencer Replicas

I read somewhere that those new replicas are chambered in 56-50 center fire. One must remember the originals were rimfire. The 56-50 should have more than enough power to down deer sized game.

2 New Calibers Offered

The latest release of the Armi Sport/Taylor Spencer will be available in a proprietary .56-50 with ammo made by a couple companies, and in .44-40. Either of these should handle deer-size game with good shot placement. The 44 Russian has actually been discontinued. I just got a used one at a great price and plan on hanging on to it! The list on the new Taylor's is up to around $1400 now.
