.50 Gi

I'd rather use a 1911 platform in 10mm or .38 super.

BTW the .50GI pistol can be converted to shoot .45acp but you can't convert a standard .45acp 1911 to shoot .50GI. They had to make the frame and slide wider to accomodate.

I think the .50GI bullet moves at something like 750 FPS. That's sloooow!

anything that's a half inch in diameter,

weighs in excess of 230 grains and moves out at better than 750 fps qualifies as a pretty serious defensive caliber. According to the Guncrafters website some of the loads in the 280 - 300 grain range can be loaded to between 800 and 900 fps. I imagine the recoil gets a little brisk at those velocities though.

Yeah, but it's twice the weight of a .45ACP IIRC. That cartridge goes for the "slower-heavier" school. I think it would be amusing to get an FA tommy gun chambered for it. I'll probably have to wait a bit to do that though.

There 1911 is my current dream gun. I just wish I could figure out how to afford it with out being in devorce court

I think it would be a neat gun for fun. But as far as hunting, combat, or serious competition, I think you could do better with a smarter choice.

I'd like to see a .50GI bullet taking on a watermelon :D

Rich man's toy. You'd have to have your butler crawling around looking for brass at that.
Ballistics are a 300 gr FMJ at 700+ fps and a 275 gr JHP at 875 fps.
