Arsenal Found in Elderly Couple's Home
June 02, 2005 3:10 PM EDT
RIDGEFIELD, N.J. - A day after police escorted a disoriented elderly woman to her home, they returned with a search warrant and found a massive cache of weapons and gunpowder.

Nearly 500 guns, including AK-47s and high-powered rifles, 500 pounds of gunpowder and 100,000 rounds of ammunition were taken Wednesday from the home of Elizabeth and Sherwin Raymond, both 82.

Sherwin Raymond, a former physician and known gun enthusiast, has twice spent time in prison: in the early 1970s for performing illegal abortions and later that decade for selling silencer-equipped submachine guns. Convicted felons are not permitted to own guns.

"People knew he was a (gun) collector, but no one suspected the magnitude of what was found," police Chief John Bogovich told The Record of Bergen County for Thursday's newspapers. "This will be a monumental task to inventory."

Police said they sought the warrant after bringing Elizabeth Raymond back to her home on Memorial Day and seeing the windows and doors open.

Police suspect many of weapons might have been bought at gun shows. Federal authorities are expected to investigate where they were purchased and whether they had ever been used in crimes.

Sherwin Raymond was charged with creating a hazardous condition and his bail was set at $25,000. Police guarded him Wednesday at a Hackensack hospital while he received dialysis treatment. His wife, who was not charged, was taken to a nearby hospital so she did not have to be alone.

Leave the old man alone

"checking to see if any of the weapons had been used in crimes" ?

Why would they?

Technically they've all been used in crimes. As he is a convicted felon, every time he bought a gun it was a felony.

I don't think that is what they were refering to in that statement though, but yes you are right if you want to be technical

Felons can have their rights restored but neither

Clinton or Bush have allowed the funding of the admin to do so.

I also don't recall the 2nd Amendment saying "unless you are a felon".
Why should they lose their right to self defense or civil defense?

What do you think will happen to the most valuable guns in that collection? Will they make it to inventory? I doubt it.

If his past criminal acts make him too dangerous to own guns, then why in the hell isn't he locked up in prison?

If he served his time for past crimes and presents absolutely no danger to the public, what's the big deal?

I especially don't like the fact that he has performed abortions (legal or not), but that's not the issue here. I'm sure the cops could find much better things to do than harrass an eccentric old man who collects guns. Convicted and released child molestors recieve less attention from the cops and courts. Maybe they might want to start there...

***? Since when is leaving your doors and windows open PC for a search warrant?

was it g gordon liddy {convicted felon} that said "my wife has a fine firearm collection."

I have spent less than 10 minutes of my adult life in New Joisey. I got on the wrong one way street in Philthydelphia and had no choice in the matter. Trying to get back they tried to charge me for the 'Privilege' of being in NJ (Toll) but allowed me to sneak back into Pennsylvania when I explained the error I had made. :neener:

A twice convicted felon has no right to keep 500 lb of explosives in a crowded residential neighborhood.

I would be careful to differentiate between explosive and gunpowder. Most gunpowders are considered propelants, while some (blackpowder) are considered an explosive. You are right though, that may be a wee bit much....

I'm really getting tired of these comments like-

"You mean killing babies is illegal?"

Yes it is, always has been and probably will be. Do we need this interjected here?

There's no way to tell from the article when he bought any of the guns. But, at 82, I'd bet many of them came when he was much younger. He was in his fifties at the time of the machine gun/silencer deal.

Hard for me to believe a guy smart enough to become a doctor would be ignorant of the law regarding machine guns and silencers.

The ammo doesn't seem like all that much, if he had been an active shooter. Lotta guns, ammo for each...

I've been reloading for some 55 years, come July. It strikes me that 500 pounds of powder is a bit much. I doubt if my own inventory has ever been above 20 pounds or so, for the various rifles and pistols for which I load.

In a way, he started asking for trouble years ago, but it just now caught up with him.

Odds are, it's pointless for The Law to worry about anything more than securing the firearms. The guy's 82 and on dialysis. My own experience with my father's dialysis deal was that it only lasted a little over a year; then, Adios.

This kind of post really toasts my hienie.

This is a pro gun group.

That is the kind of tripe that I would expect to hear from a blissninny or a flaming liberal.

This is a pro gun group.

Please take another look at 2a.

"500"!!! Damn, something to look forward to in my old age. :) Folks that AGREE with penalties, against other folks, convicted of unconstitutional laws suck. IMHO.

BryanP said: "As he is a convicted felon, every time he bought a gun it was a felony." That depends on who you are. Did it make the news, a few years ago, when Sean Penn had two guns stolen from his car in Berkeley? His is a fellon and still got a CCW. I can't even get an application in California. I do have a CCW from Nevada.

Guy has to be an odd ball. Being a physician is a very lucrative profession, even more so when that guy probably practiced, so why sell illegal weapons? Wow 500 guns? Puts all of us to shame. The gun shops where I live don't even have that much in inventory.

With all due respect what a bunch of rubbish. I'm as pro-gun as anyone in the country, even own my share of EBR's. BUT I DON"T WANT CONVICTED FELONS OWNING FIREARMS!!!

They are convicted felons after all, in my book they have lost their rights by infringing on the rights of others. In case you can't tell I'm all for felony convictions preventing you from owning firearms, no need to arm the bad guys.

nobody comments on the scary part?

didnt you all notice the HUGE anti thought in there???

Police suspect many of weapons might have been bought at gun shows

hooray!!! another cannonball lobbed at the gun evil gun show. felons buying guns at shows and keeping them as a collection!!!
evil evil evil!!!

you know that's the angle on this

500 firearms, 100,000rds of ammo, wish it was my collection. But the guy is a two time felon which equals no right to own firearms. Feeble old man or not.

This is a double whammy against legitimate law abiding citizens and the way the story was written since one: A felon with firearms. Two: Firearms may have been purchased at Guns Shows, felon obtaining firearms easily. More fuel to the fire.

Careful who you convict today

WT_! :fire: :banghead:

Since when is 500 guns odd????? Which of us do not long for a collection like that??????????????????? And what amount of powder is o.k. to have before your "weird" 20 lbs., 40 lbs., 100 lbs. Then is 101 lbs. "weird"?

:cuss:
