iam buying me a Handi Rifle to hunt with in The 500 S&W Mag do any of you other hunters have a Handi In 500 Mag? .Let me know how they shoot please

To be honest, I don't have a Handi Rifle in that caliber. I have several in other calibers including a 45-70. I know a guy back in my hometown that puchased one.

He was happy with everything except the recoil. He said it was so bad he couldn't keep a scope on it. He even had a gunsmith drill it so he could use three scope rings. Didn't work!

He did say it was accurate.

I wonder if anyone makes "peep" sights for these things?

I have one and it seems pretty accurate so far. I'm in the process of developing loads with Lil'Gun and hornady FTX bullets for hunting this fall.

Ive put about 20 400gn MBC cast throul it with a med charge of H110 and no leading so far. (chrono 1450FPS) Also about 15 shots of the FTX and they shoot pretty straight. (not chrono'd yet) The weather conditions were horrible when I did all this so I am not confident in a good accurate load yet.

I have a Nikon Prostaff and Angle-Loc rinds on a NEF rail and my scope is still there and crosshairs still intact...

I dont know if it will hold up, as recoil IS sharp. We killed a Bushnell Banner on a Handi-Rifle with 500gn loads in a 45/70, so I'm not sure I would go too cheap on the scope.

FWIW....I couldnt hit ANYTHING with the factory installed Williams Firesights that NEF gives you, and they seemed too "cheap" (plastic) to me, so I took em off.

I think i can find a scope that will handle the recoil if i have save up & buy a higher priced one . I am going to give the Barska a try first & see if it holds up . A good friend of mine has a handi in 45-70 govt & i shot it several times i didn't think the kick was all that bad. We shall see

500 S&W is alot of caliber for that little rifle :what: what exactly are you planning to hunt with that cannon? Bison, Brown bear, Moose? I would think the recoil to be a TAD on the heavy side for most hunting situations, but if you enjoy the feeling of your teeth being shaken loose that is a really cool gun to do it with :D

I've been interested in the 500 S & W myself. Please share updates with us.

I briefly owned a H & R single shot in 35 Whelen that kicked very badly. I had a 4X Simmons shotgun scope on it that held up fine.

Thank you.

if you can afford to shoot a .500 S&W, you should be able to afford something more than a H&R Handi Rifle, they are OK in smaller calibers but bottom line they are a low price firearm.

First off I reload all of my 500 Magnum rounds & i would just as soon have a Handi Rifle as just about any of the others I like them never had a single problem with no Handi ive ever owned not one they are good guns for the price . I couldn't afford to buy factory ammo for the 500 mag because it is priced way over my head i snooped around the gunbroker auctions & got the brass for my Handi Rifle for much less than i could get em from a store & the bullets cost me 25.99 for 100 that aint too bad either i enjoy getting to shoot my Handi as much i can & reloading makes it really easy to do just that

that is a good price for that ammo, I didnt mean the Handi rifles were "cheap", they are low price, but dependable, only trouble I had with the one I had besides not being a great shooter was that the action would sometimes break open when I fired it.

Yeah ive heard of some of the Handi's coming open when being shot i heard that to much oil can cause this i just heard this somewhere i had a friend who had a 243 win & he sent it to a smith & got it corrected it only cost $10 .After that it never opened up again. Matter a fact he still has it .He bought it at a local weekly flea/gun sale . Man that thing is a nail driver also i load for him lol i guess i have shot it just about as much as he has. I also like being able to buy another barrel for $68-$96 .

"...any of you other hunters have..." Wouldn't even think about it. Ammo's far too expensive and hard to get. Reloading, of course, is your friend, but the brass isn't cheap either. Runs $42.95 per 50 for Hornady, up here. You'd have to sell a kidney for loaded ammo, if you could find any. Hornady runs around $70 per 20.
.500 S&W ammo isn't cheap nor easy to find, Stateside, either. Midway, for example, starts at $38.50 per 20 for Ultramax 330 grain ammo. $30.99 per 50 for Starline nickled brass. $54.99 per 100 for non-plated. Goes a long way up from there.
The cartridge is limited for hunting too.

the $60-$96 turned out to be $140 all said and done on mine a few months ago.

Very cool rifle though. Its a Handloaders "Fun Gun"

Sunray:
Dont knock it till you try it. It may be "limited" but then so is a 45/70. Each of our tools/guns has it's intended use. It's definately not a Do All gun, or practical, just cool.

O.P. wasnt about justifying choice or cost....just experience

i have one in 35 whelen, but have not fired it yet,i wish it had open sights on it. eastbank.

NEF In 500 S&W Magnum

I won 130 1x fired 500 S&W cases on gunbroker for $45.67 & $5.20 S&H & ive won another auction for 50 New ones for $37.90 + $6.00 S&H . I pay $25.99 for 100 of the Rainer 335 Grn TCJHP at our local gun shop . I also have been doing some trading around to keep my costs down if i had to use factory ammo in the 500 S&W i wouldn't be able to have it can't afford the crazy price .I've loaded the 190 rounds of my 500 Mags for around $125.00 give or take $5 or $6 ain't bad really . I am going to deer hunt with my 500 S&W this fall can't wait really

:DIll be shooting mine more this weekend, Trapper500, I'll let you know how it does and hopefully have some shot groups.

Ill tell you one thing though, It knocks down the metal 1/2"x8" circle plate from jcvibby (ar500 group buy) that I have hanging at 100yds every time!!!

I cant wait either!:D

Have you shot yours yet?

I too, did it on the cheap.

2:1 trade for 44mag brass from a member here

MBC bullets $44/200 (plinking),

Lil"Gun powder $25,

300gn Hornady L.E. bullets $30/50pc, for the deer this fall.

All shots will be 150yds at MAX....more likely 75-100 where I set up at.
