I'm interested in joining the .50BMG club in a year or so and discovered the .50 uppers that mount to ar15 lowers. I was about to get an AK varient or an AR, but if the .50 uppers will mount to an Ar than I'm going that route. Has anybody tried this or more specifically mounted a .50 upper to an M4 type lower? Any info would be great.

Well, I don't know what longhorngunman is after but those are turning AR-15's into bolt action rifles. I thought he was after a semi-auto, and the AR-15 is not very compatible with such a conversion. I believe there is an AR-50 that is a purpose built .50BMG that uses the same design concept as the AR-15, but beefed up to handle the .50.

The ALS 50BMG AR15 upper is the way to go. It operates like a real single shot bolt action, unlike the other uppers which require partial disassembly to reload.

The AR-50's design has nothing in common with the AR15 except that they are both made by Armalite.

Thanks for the responses and I'm sorry I didn't make myself clearer. I just want to be able to shoot the .50bmg with an ar lower, bolt action is fine. I know for semiauto .50 shooting I'd have to go Barrett but not for 8 grand. :what: Basically is it alright to use a Bushy M4 lower for this setup or would it be wise to have a regular stock lower used. I'm ignorant on AR's, the M4 lower and a regular stock ar15 lower are the same besides the collapsible stock right? Thanks for the input and patience with an AR newbie. :)

If I were going to do this, I'd dedicate a lower to it and use a fixed stock, just because the increased LOP will probably be helpful with regard to scope mounting (eye relief).

There's a semi auto .50 BMG upper for an AR-15 lower in the works, it might even be out. I think it's made by the same company that makes the UltraMag50 upper.

So are alot of other people!

I made sure to buy a universal receiver before the ban, that way I can decide what to do with it. Mark says that he has enough parts to make a few of the semi's, I'm waiting to see one first.

Upper conversions

We here at Safety Harbor Firearms build 2 different .50 cal rifles now - First the UltraMag 50 which is the AR conversion. Bolt action mag fed 18,22,29 inch barrel lengths. We just started making a complete rifle - SHF/R50 - Basically it uses the proven UM-50 action but its a complete rifle out of the box. Available in the same barrel lengths as the UM-50. We are not building a semi upper for the AR - Not to say it can not be done but it would be like stuffing 100 lbs. in a 1 lbs. bag.

If your looking at a upper conversion and want a mag fed rifle the UltraMag 50 is the ticket - If your looking for a complete rifle ready to fire the SHF/R50 is the best buy out there for a .50 cal repeater.

Thanks

Now, the question for California residents is this...

Can one put a .50BMG upper receiver on a AR-15 lower? Since the upper isn't "the gun", there shouldn't be any problem, right? ;)

What about putting a .50BMG upper on a FAB-10 lower (same as the AR, just with a fixed 10-round magazine)? Would that cause any mechanical problems? What about the legal status?

CA and a Upper

The lower had to have been registered prior to Jan 1 05 as a .50 cal rifle - If that was done then it is OK. On the FAB once you remove the internal mag it works fine.

...what happens when the FAB is used as a .223 rifle, and someone puts a .50 cal upper on it?

Also, it's my impression that the internal magazine is riveted in place. I was looking to buy a few spare magazines (or hopefully just use regular 10-round mags) in case the original one broke. I was told by the FFL that it "simply can't be done" and that if the magazine ever breaks or wears out, I can just send it back to the company and they'll fix it. Somehow, I don't like relying on outside parties who may or may not exist in a few years to make proprietary magazines that are not user-replaceable.

If I lived in California and was going to build a .50 on an AR lower, I'd get one of the DPMS single shot lowers and build the rifle on that (but it looks like its too late for that).
