This verifies what I suspected...the .45 will out penetrate the 10mm (most likely) due to the increased weight and momentum of the grand old round.

If you don't mind, I'm going to copy your test results to show to some of my friends who think that anything developed more than 30 years ago is outdated and inferior to todays high performance cartridges.

I wouldnt be so quick to pass a verdict on the test results. Im not trying to dog the OP's test, as it does give a good general guideline on how a bullet expands, but wet phone books arent ideal testing materials. Shooting a hp into a jug of water will make the bullet expand but water isnt an ideal testing media either. Ever see a high velocity rifle round hit water? It literally fragments into a bunch of pieces, compared to when the same round hits living tissue, it will expand and penetrate.

Ballistic gelatin is an ideal testing media. Its what alot of ammo manufacturers and the Fed. Govt use. Its biggest drawback is its price.

Mike Mcnett(Double Tap) released his findings from his ammo on expansion and penetration. Heres how the 10mm and 45ACP stacked up.

DoubleTap 10mm
135gr JHP @ 1600fps - 11.0" / .70" frag nasty
155gr Gold Dot JHP @ 1475fps - 13.5" / .88"
165gr Gold Dot JHP @ 1400fps - 14.25" / 1.02"
165gr Golden Saber JHP @ 1425fps - 14.75" / .82"
180gr Golden Saber JHP @ 1330fps - 16.0" / .85"
180gr Gold Dot JHP @ 1300fps - 15.25" / .96"
200gr XTP @ 1250fps - 19.5" / .72"
230gr Equalizer @ 1040fps - 11.0" and 17.0" / .62" and .40"

DoubleTap .45ACP
185gr Gold Dot JHP @ 1225fps - 12.75" / .82"
200gr Gold Dot JHP @ 1125fps - 14.25" / .88"
230gr Gold Dot JHP @ 1010fps - 15.25" / .95"

I bolded the better performers and when it comes to expansion, penetration and energy, the 10mm outshines the .45ACP.

That's because of the two 10mm loads tested, one was designed specifically for low penetration (135gr nosler), and the other was downloaded to .40S&W territory (180gr hydrashock). A 180gr projectile out of a full power 10mm load should be doing at least 1300fps, not 1030.

Yep. I agree.

45 has greater mass but less momentum.

The 10mm rounds i used were not meant for deep penetration..Mike From Double Tap loaded the 135gr as a self defense round and he specificaly states on his website this was not designed for over penetration..So i didnt expect to get alot of penetration with it..Also the Hydra Shock is a weaker 10mm round..and was not designed for deep penetration either..All rounds did very well on there expansion except for the Aguila bullet..Also my tests are based on what a civilian should expect upon the projectile hitting soft tissue and what it would look like when expanded...As far as i am concerned every caliber that i tested will do the job just fine..The 10mm and .45 have a long track record of proving itself in stopping the bad guys and even 4 legged critters if loaded properly...Also my tests may not be as accurate as Mike Mcnetts from Double Tap..Just because i was not using a full size glock20 so my velocities will be off a few hundred fps as the same goes for my Ruger Alaskan snub 2 1/2" barrel..I believe if i were shooting these guns at a closer range and using full length barrels with possibly a softer more mushy type of a phone book i would have gotten better results.A few days back i recieved my 230gr 50gi Solid Copper Hollow Points and went out to do some civilian tests on them..I have posted the results below..

I recieved my batch of 230gr SCHP a few days back and today i got a chance to test them out using the same 15inches of Wet Phone book method... But this time the phonebooks were soaked over night and i was able to gain a much more softer tissue...Also instead of doing my normal 17ft-18ft distance....i chose to do the standard 10ft as what they normaly do when testing bullets in balistic gelatin...My results will impress you on depth and expansion..As you know all of the SCHP bullets expand as wide as 1inch as its suppose to..the first shot fired i did not recover the bullet..it seemed to turn a little high and existed with a huge hole..The second shot fired i still was unable to retrieve the bullet..but this time it didnt turn high it left another huge hole almost in the center...As i can see i am getting more than 15 inches of penetration and running out of space to shoot in the phonebooks..So i backed up another 5ft and shot my 3rd bullet ..I was able to retrive the bullet in the last phone book ,which penetrated half way through the last phone book. The expansion as you can see is below in the pic..The total inches measured was 13.20" to be almost exact...This is very impressive..i believe this could be a good candidate for hog hunting......Also please take in cosideration this new test has involved a more softer mushy phone book than the others that i have used in the past..also subtract 2ft in distance
