Everyone is encouraged to submit ranging challenges. Include any info you like in the post, such as pertinent details about your reticle, target type/dimensions, weather, location, etc.

One challenge per post.

Obscure the actual range between the words "START" and "STOP" and change the color of the text to white, which will be invisible until readers highlight it.

Reticle shown is Leupold's Tactical Milling Reticle (TMR) and the scope is a Leupold Mark 4 FFP spotting scope.

TIP: Target is representative of a "typical" man if measured from crotch to crown. The target is not at exactly the same range as the target in post #3.

TIP: The little yellow men are not full-size but if you consider the helmet to be part of the head, I can tell you that the "head" is very close to a "typical" human head in size. This is quite a good "test" since you may not have all the necessary information when shooting at live targets whether it's a bad guy or something of the four-legged variety.

Ok here's one. Tgt. size is 12", MD reticle in 2nd FP optic at 18x, but correct milliradian subtension is at 12x. The math for 18x subtension is true as calculated.

I was out shooting handguns at a military range yesterday and managed to get some more practice targets at different distances to those shown above. I used a Swarovski Laser Guide and took numerous measurements to get a reasonable average of the actual distance. Conditions weren't ideal for photograpy or ranging due to sun, mirage, and aerosols but this is "real-world" ranging where conditions can be difficult.

The steel "men" are close to man size if you assume that the steel part of the target is the head and torso. The reactive targets have the following approximate dimensions:

Head width: 7-1/2"
Head height: 9"
Width elbow to elbow: 19"
Width below elbows: 14"
Height from crotch to top of head: 30"

I don't really know. I got some readings from the laser at 700m but my first shot was high (saw the impact on the tree, surprisingly enough) and my correction for the second shot (seen on the plate at 7 oclock) matches my 670m dope.

These pictures were taken a few seconds apart in a very challenging wind. It would shift back and forth like this a couple times/minute, all afternoon. Weather report said 20-30mph today. It felt like 10-15 in my face and my 260AI needed around 1.1 mil of right wind at times and a left-edge hold when the flags were running straight towards me.





~ace~ made me some new target stand joints. These stand a little higher because the legs are about 60* apart instead of 90*. The rebar is still 48" but there is more pipe on each end so it looks several inches longer.

Target is still 10" square.
