55g HP Dogtown bullets in .223

I am reading good reviews on both the HP's and the SP's and am thinking about ordering some. I mostly shoot paper, but do very occasionally shoot prairie dogs when I have the chance.

Has anyone used either on small game that can comment about the results of one compared to the other? I have other cheap bullets (55g Hornady FMJ's) that I use for plinking some, but I would like something that has more accuracy potiential than those do. Another benefit for me would be to be able to use the same load for plinking as I would for prairie dogging.

Most importantly, if I do order some, what do you guys recommend I use as load data? I am a new reloader, and I am very leery about using anything that doesn't have published load data from a manufacturer. But, if you guys tell me that they are comparable to a certain bullet that I have data for, then I would very seriously consider buying them.

Any and all comments would be appreciated.

Dogtown bullets are likely one of the brand name manufacturer's over runs or blemish type of bullet.
Using them will not be any different than any other flat base 55gr.

If you use the data provided for 55gr SP or HP, you will be fine. They should shoot much better than the 55gr FMJ that you have used before.

I'm guessing that you are loading 223 Rem. What powders do you have?

Sorry, yes, .223.

I have IMR 4198, Varget, Benchmark, and IMR 4895.

They're all usable in the 223. I'd load up starting loads of each, and see how they do. Then work from there with those showing the most promise.

I have used varmint nightmare extreme bullets in 55gr. softpoints from Midsouth shooters supply and they worked very well. I think that they are close to the same as the dogtown bullets. They work well in .223 and are extremely explosive in .22-250.

I think that I read that the Dogtowns were Hornady. You might try a google search to confirm.

I have used some of the 50 grn Dogtown in 223 rem with H335 and Benchmark and they worked fine for general use. Golf balls at 100 yrds is no problem, an egg is impressive. They seem to open up rather well.
