586-1: Should I????

For some reason lately I've been in a revolver kind of mood.

I've alway had a .44mag or .480ruger, big bore revolver for hunting.

At this time I finally got my ultimate woods carry gun, a S&W 629 Mountain Gun. I've wanted one for years, and earlier this year was able to buy one from a private party for $425. I really like this gun.

Then earlier this month, I decided that a 342PD would be a nice carry gun. Picked it up off of glocktalk for $412.50/shipped. This gun was basically new, hadn't seen 20 rounds. The seller also threw in 5 holsters. I'm pretty sure this was a great deal. Carried it all weekend at the beach. It has completely replaced my Glock 26/27.

Now I'm thinking of getting either a .357mag or a .45ACP revolver. Probably going to wait on the .45ACP, and get another 1911. Primary use will be range/target, also home defense for my wife when I'm away.

Now to my real question. A local dealer has a 586-1 4" .357mag, it has the "M" meaning it has been updated. Lock up is very tight, bluing is 85-95%. Gun looks really good, the only wear is one of the medallions on the grip. I'm really a stainless guy, but I really like the looks of this gun.

Asking price is $295 + Tax. Probably could end up with it for $295 out the door.

So what do you think? Should I go for it? Should I just get a GP100?

I would go $200 out the door.

From the research i've done here, I think that I'm in the ballpark.

Now him paying me, that would be a concept. Maybe I should pass it by him???

Maybe for every 20-30 sales I pass his way, I could get a sizeable discount.

If you feel it is in the ballpark for your area, then by all means go and get it. Picked up a 586 last year. Great gun. Quickly became one of my favorite revolvers.

IF you wanted to shop has you could likely beat the price, but if you have the money and want the gun...

You didn't say what barrel lenght was, I assume 4". I personally wouldn't pay more than $275+tax.

A 586 will get much more than $295 where I live (So Cal, just west of the United States)

When I was shopping for my 442 I saw a very well used Charter Arms 38 for $195!!!

At $295, the price sounds way high too me also. Even
with you being in "the high rent district", I think $225
would be topps for a 90 per center!

I can get solid mechanically good 686 most of the time for about 250+tax, or 586 fo a few dollars less, but finish might be like 80% and I would be buying it sight unseen. If I found one in a shop I would pay 10% more to be able to check it out before I spent my $ on it.

I love my 6" 586-M. I would like to get more in the future. Very accurate, very comfortable, very well made gun. As for the price, around here it is hard to find an L-frame in condition worth buying for anything under $390-400.

I thought I was a bargin hunter but $200 for a 586!!!! I bought mine for $330 in about 90-95% and I never saw another for cheaper after I bought it. $295 OTD sounds pretty good to me, I would buy it as it is one of the best guns I have ever owned. the 586/686 are nicer than the Ruger GP-100 and they will almost certainly have a better trigger and be just as accurate or more accurate than a GP-100.

I don't think you could go wrong for that price if it is a solid revolver. I wish I shopped where some of you shop.

Make sure you give it a good checkout; the last 581-1 purchaser I know really should have brought a range rod. Mis-alignment of the barrel in the frame strikes me as the kind of error that runs in batches.

If it's a good 'un, $295 isn't a truly outrageous price ($250-$275 would be more normal), but the guns turn up for sale rarely enough that if you really want one, you buy when you find, because it may be a while before you turn up another one.

I bought my 4" 586-1 for $300 and couldn't be happier with it. Good trigger, shoots great and I like its looks.

I also have a 4" blued GP100. I shoot the GP100 more, because I have invested some money in it to make it into exactly the revolver I wanted. But the 586 is a very nice gun. I wouldn't want to have to choose between the two.

Just last night I found a 4" 686 w/5 sets of different grips. Out the door price is $350. The gun is rated 99%.

I think for an extra $50, I'll go for it instead.

I HATE you people! Where on earth are you finding 586s and 686s for that kind of pocket change? It must be a location thing. Revolvers are cheap around hear compared to autos but no way are you going to find a 586 for $200. I think I may take a trip around the country buying up all the $200 586s.

I'm with you Firestar. I paid 300 otd for a 99.9% 586-4 6"and felt like I did great.

I paid $310 OTD for a 95% blue, mechanically LN cop trade-in 586 last April. It came with an expensive Bianchi #2800 black duty holster (for sale cheap).

Best revo money I ever spent. Accurate, smooth, comfortable shooter. It's usually in the passenger side of the bed, stoked with 145 gr Silvertips.
