Should I Buy this Smith 586?

Hi,

I prefer semi-auto pistols and am not much of a revolver person … mostly because it seems to take me much much longer to clean a revolver. Perhaps I am not doing it right. Anyway … I still look at many used revolvers that come in to my favorite dealer, especially if I think it may be a good deal.

So, an excellent condition 6†Smith 586 showed up. It is from the early '80s (is a non "dashed" model 586). There are a few minor points of wear but nothing major (easily a 95+% specimen). The timing appears fine and the lockup and bluing are excellent compared to more recently produced Smiths that I have handled.

I checked and the going rate on the auction sites and Guns America appears to be in the $250 to $300+ range. But I know that the auction sites and Guns America are not necessarily the best gauge of pricing.

I can get this one for $275. Is this a “killer don’t pass up on it dealâ€, just a so-so price, or a “pass on it ‘cause there are plenty out there that cost lessâ€?

P.S. – There was also a nearly new blued Taurus PT58 with two high caps for $225. Is that good?

Seriously, get it. That is great price from what I have seen lately. I got my 586-3 back in 1995 used for $250. They came down from $275. I love mine. I have put way too many hot loads through it so it is starting to get a little loose, but it still shots great!! Now I want one with a 4 inch barrel for target work.

IMO, it's right between the two extremes

Look near the model number for a 'M' stamped near it. If it doesn't have this, then it needs to be sent back to S&W for an upgrade to make sure it's 100% reliable with magnum ammo. Don't fret, as they cover it both ways. You're only out the time it takes.

I'll tell you where it is ... It has been sitting on the desk in the office in the back of the gun shop since yesterday afternoon.

They are pretty flexible with holding stuff for me since they have made a pretty good living off of me with all the buying and selling (mostly on consignment) I have done there over the past eight years or so. If I didn't live so far from the shop I'd be working there part time ... and going broke too.

I bought a beautiful 586 on Auction Arms two years ago for $280. I was thrilled with the price, so I think you should like $275 even more.

Buy it!! I just got my first S&W and it's a 586. I think I am hooked and looking for more S&W.

Don't hesitate one more moment. Go and get that gun. I picked up a 586 in the fall and it is by far my favorite revolver. Amazing how it soaks up recoil and how accurate it is. I really don't think you can go wrong with a 586.

I've had 2 that were just gems to shoot. Unfortunately, they both ended up as part of separate trades for other things. My vote: BUY IT!

If it's from the early 80's, it's a good gun. I've had mine since it was almost new (paid $225 for it back in 1982 or so). Had a little trigger work done on it, and since then the trigger's been better than any Python I've ever handled.

Accurate and feels just right. And a real workhorse.

How accurate? The target at http://www.shootersshop.com/range.html is twelve rounds offhand, DA, at fifty feet with light .357 reloads. ('Course, that's back when I could see ).
