I'm looking at a S&W 586 no dash, 6", very low round count. 98% or better, no box, nice wood. What are they selling for in today's market place? I'm thinking $450 +/-.
For an excellent 6" gun, that sounds about right to me. 4" would be a little more probably. I would deduct at least 10% if it didn't have nice original wood, so that is good that it does. I think they were peaking at about $550 4"/ $500 6" on average last year, and down about 10% since then so I would feel comfortable paying $4xx for one now as nice as you describe that.
I might have an opportunity to buy a 6" 586 from a friend of mine...thing is, I'm not to interested in a 6" barrel though...any idea how much S&W would want to rebarrel it into a 4" or maybe even a 3"??
Probably at least $200 and the shipping each way, so you are looking at $250? A good rule of thumb is to buy the gun you want, don't build it yourself. If you know you want the 4", buy that. If the 6" is sub $400, then buy it, shoot it a bit, then sell it and put the money towards a 4 inch.
