Went to order a new 590 and told them I'd love to find what they once called the 590A2. When it first came out there were dealers trying to tell you only police could buy it and I had a 590 anyway so I just let it go. Well now I figure I'll find out if it can be bought or not.

Apparently no, they now call it the DA. Heavier barrel, steel trigger guard, etc. Question is, I went ahead and had them order Ghost Rings and heat sheild for it wondering the entire time if they'll fit. The barrel obviously has to have a larger exterior diameter. Anyone ever put ghost Rings and sheild on one of these? Or am I the only loon willing to pay an extra hundred bucks for a little more metal and thus on my own? Oh, do these still have the bayonet lug and if so, does the bayo actually fit?

The DA is the worlds first Double action Only shotgun.

as such it has a bleeding horrible trigger. you'd be better off with a standard 590 or a 500.

The 590's a good fighting shotgun. Darn near as good as an 870, in fact.

However, the heavy, nasty trigger on the DA is moving in the wrong direction.

Get a standard Mossie, make sure the trigger runs less than 4 lbs, and use up ammo until you're deadly to the right people. Training and expertise beat the heck out of gadgets...

The damn DA trigger isn't what I wanted. The heavy barrel and steel trigger guard are. Seems that you can't have those without the other now which I didn't realize until doing some closer reading. Looks like I'll have to call the shop today and change that order.

Re: Heat Shield

The only time my heavy-barrelled 590A1 gets hot is when I shoot a round of trap as a single. That's 25 shots (a boxful, one right after another) about one every 10 or 15 seconds.

Rethink the need for another two pounds of metal and about 8 snag points. Or buy mine, cheap.

Changed the order to a regular 590 with the 18.5" barrel. Figure I'll try something different one way or another. OTOH, Ledbatter, if ya wanna sell the whole Mossy and not just the ehat shield...

I'm have been looking to get a 590 for HD. So tell me what you finally ended up ordering. You got the 18.5" barrel, what about sights, shield, speedstock, etc.?

The shop(Switz City Guns) is supposed to let me know here in a day or so what they've found out. John is going to try and get me the short one with the GR sites and sheild and a regular stock. I always stick an ATI folder on my 590's cause it seems like the best of both worlds to me.

For some reason the catalog they had didn't list the A1 but the Mossy website does. I just haven't had time see what's up with that.

I was looking to get a 590 with regular stock, 20" barrel, 9 shot extension, Ghost Sights and shield. However I believe their website says that you cannot get the shield if you get Ghost Sights. I don't quite understsand that since it appears that the sheild would not interfere with the sights. I'd like to know what you finally get because I'm at the point of heading to my gun shop soon.

I'll tell you what is simplest, which is what I did on my last two. get the 20" with the heat shield, order a set of Ghosts and have your smith slap 'em on. Both I got previously were in-stock items and so I had to play DIY. I'm beginning to think it would have just been easier to do it that way this time since it seems Mossberg itself isn't quite sure what they will and won't put together.

Anyway, I should know by the end of the week what I'm getting in to.

I'm planning to go to the Indy 1500 show this weekend. I hope to find a dealer there and maybe get a hands on with a Mossy 590 and hopefully understand better how the shield and ghost sights work together.

So What Have I Got?

I bought a Mossberg 590 used about 5 years ago. It has the identical appearance of the 590DA shown on the link EXCEPT it doesn't have the DA trigger. Would this be the 590A2 that 2nd Amendment wanted???

OK, that was a mistake of mine. It's a 590A1, not A2; heavy barrel, steel(aluminum?) trigger guard, etc. That's the one I want, it shows on the Mossy website, but it doesn't show up in the shop catalogs. I am assuming at this point it's been decided to make it an LEO only item. If yours has the heavy barrel and such then it's an A1.

Also, if you're having trouble getting dealers to admit the existance of the 590A1, it may help to use the exact catalog number. The 590A1 model numbers start with 51, the DA starts with 53, and the non-A1 590 starts with 50. I have the 18.5" GRS (Ghost Ring) Bantam, which is 51520. With the regular stock, it'd be 51517.

That's more dense than stamped steel or nylon if it weighs that much. Mine weighs less than a pound, and it's steel.

A Double Action trigger on a shotgun?! That's just plain wrong. Even if the liability lawyers did have a hand in it.

DAO isn't necessarily incomprehensible on a shotgun. Many agencies (mine included) only break out the shotguns twice a year for qualification. We carry DAO autos. I would feel better knowing my fellow LEOs (who aren't gun people) are carrying something closer to our duty weapons (read- without such a short trigger pull). I would like us to go to the 590DA but no one listens to me. Heck, I would like to see our MP-5s replaced with FN P-90s

I own a Mossberg 590DA and enjoy shooting it. The trigger is not "hard and gritty" as some people claim. I'm used to shooting revolvers and dao autos, so the da trigger is natural to me.

Southern Ohio Gun has 590A1's, thats who I ordered mine from. My 590A1 (model 51660) cost like $280 + shipping + transfer, IIRC.

Faith in the shooter's training and muzzle control - not the gun's trigger or safety history - is a concept that many folks fail to recognize.

"Gun people" (which doesn't necessarily include LEO's) don't have an issue with this, but some non-gun enthusiast LEO's could probably use all of the help that they can get.

Long trigger pulls have their place, but I personally don't think that it's a substiture for training.
