Went to the range yesterday with my Carl Gustave swedish mauser after sighting it in the new scope (leapers 5th Gen 6-24x50) I was able to keep 1.5" groups at 150 meters and about 4.5" at 400 meters. Some groups varied a bit but those were the best, all groups were 5 shots each. I was shooting 120gr ballistic tips 40.8grains of 4350. One thing I noticed was that when the barrel got hot I could not hold tight groups was wondering if anyone else had notices this. (I dont have this problem when shooting my uncles sako)

A few questions:

1. Is it still in full military (Stocked) or an aftermarket stock?
2. Which barrel length, the 29 inch m/96 length or the 23.5 inch m/38 length?
3. Which brass and primers are you using? And what COL?

Depending in how it is stocked, a hot barrel can make a HUGE difference.

Its still has the original stock, 29in barrel, as far as brass i was shooting nosler and R-P I did watch as i was shooting and both shot about the same when the gun was not hot and the primers are cci magnum rifle primers

A friend of mine studied results the shooters were getting in the infamous warehouse in Huston in the late 70's. He didn't shoot there but read all he could. In these written discussions the two main men involved, Virgil King and Bob Fisher, held that the perfect barrel length was 21 3/4 inches...a 1/4 in more or less was disastrous.

Later Steve took a 96 Mauser that shot average groups and had it cut to that length and recrowned and said it was nearly miraculous, you had to almost screw up on purpose to make it shoot 5 rounds into more than .25 inches. This was with the military barrel and cut down stock. He used the benchrest techniques he learned from the warehouse as well. While this is not close to the .025 groups that were obtained in the warehouse for a modded surplus gun they were phenomenal.

The 96 Mauser has the potential to be one of the most accurate of all the military Mausers. I have owned several including a couple of the target versions but have never held onto one long enough to mod it...maybe it is time to start looking again.

You may have a spot in the barrel channel of the stock that touches or presses against the barrel when she heats up. You can find it and do a little light sanding to relieve the pressure. .
Try some RL-19 or RL-22 and use standard primers. Lapua brass is the best when you can find it. I have some that has been reloaded 15-17 times.
Make sure you load your bullets to a long COL due to the long throat in the Swede Mausers.

I've got two Swedish Mausers. One is a 96 and the other a 38 which is shorter and newer. I'm a big fan of the rifles and of the round. My old 96 which has a wonderful two stage trigger shoots fantastic, the 38 does not. Not bad, but nothing like the 96.

Now, it has been some time since I shot my rifles and frankly I can't recall how the rifles shot after heating up some, but I have shot many rifles whose zero wanders after they head up. My Sweeds are still in the original military condition.

thanks for the info and ill try a rl-22 or 19 next time i get powder and Ill check the stock for for rubbing but hopefully its just as germster said and is just the rifle thanks all.

dont know squat about old mil surp 6.5 rifles, do knnow for a fact my 6.5 x 55 Sako is one of the best and favorite rifles to come out of my safe.

I would say your problem is (Bedding) Bed it and try again, you will be surprised !

That seems like fine accuracy to me. I wouldn't touch it, except to shoot it that is.

My 1909 Carl Gustav M 96 with Priv Partizan 139 gr SP was 1.5 inch grp at 100 yds. This is stock gun
