I believe you'll like the 550 American better if the classic Mauser action and longer barrel matter to you. The 557 will most likely be a half-pound lighter, because of the barrel length & differences in the action. Myself, I went with a 22" barrel on mine & don't regret it in the least. I'm sorry but I don't remember if you stated you reload or not. If you do, you can really take advantage of the American barrel.
What are your hunting environments like? Dense eastern woods, Iowa type woodlots and rolling hills, open prairie, or OMG mountains? Even though I'm well past "middle age", I hunt the up & down in the mountains of Montana and am in good enough shape to not worry about every stinkin' ounce. The barrel length is worth it to me. My scope is a 3.5-10X mil-dot and it serves the entire spectrum of my hunting very well indeed.
I think you'll be a very happy camper with the Swede, and please let us know how you equip it.
