6.8 Caliber M4 Rifle???

DPMS 6.8 Caliber M4 Rifle

This may be a stupid question but what is a 6.8 caliber? I have seen these guns for sale but can’t find ammo marked 6.8. Is there another name for it like 7.62=.308 6.8=??
Anyone know about the ballistics and/or knockdown power of this round? I want an ar-15 chambered in a large enough rounds to hunt white tail deer with that can also be an all around gun without the high recoil of a .308. I have heard the .223 is way to small but what is a 6.8 caliber.

6.8 SPC is basically a halfway cartridge between 7.62x39 and 5.56x45. It has more accuracy than the AK cartridge and more hitting power than the AR cartridge. It fits in AR mags without modification I think.

I personally think 6.5 grendel is better than 6.8 SPC. It shoots a bit flatter than 7.62x39 at close ranges but due to very good BC, the bullets can reach much further. There is no massive AK style drop off after 300 yards. While the 6.8 SPC is maybe a 400-500 yard cartridge, the 6.5 grendel is easily an 800+ yards capable. And it is big enough to take deer with.

Plus Wolf Gold Line now makes 6.5 grendel loads but still no 6.8 SPC.

The 6.8SPC is loosely based off the .30 Remington, and uses .277 bullet.

Remington offers loaded ammo with FMJ bullets, as well as unprimed brass, and FMJ reloading bullets. Bullet weight is 115 grains. There is also another bullet style available in loaded ammo, but I forgot what it is.

Sorry, the 6.8 is not some other round with a fancy name. It is a newly designed critter

My Stag 6.8 lower has a mag well the same size as the regular .223 lowers.

the 6.8 and 6.5 can both use a standard AR lower. However I believe they need their own special magazines so the rounds feed properly.

Standard AR mags may be used with a 6.8 upper. However the mag must be modified by trimming back the lips of the mag in order to accept the slightly larger girth of the round. Also, only load 25 6.8mm rounds into a 30 round .223/5.56mm mag.

Actually this is not true. From Zak Smith's 6.8 FAQ

No (*see note below) Not USGI 30's, 20's, Thermolds, nor Orlites. Approximately 5-6 will fit and feed properly. Loading more will cause the mag to swell and it won't fit in the mag well.[1]

Alexander Arms makes AR's in 6.5 Grendel and .50 Beowulf. They also make ammo, and license out the ability for other custom shops to make rifles in those calibers.
