I was wondering if anyone elce has used the 6.8 SPC cartridge for Deer hunting other than me. I had a stroke 3 years ago that left my right arm almost useless and my right leg the same. The VA said it was caused by Agent Orange when I served in Viet Nam in the Army back in 69. I am indeed lucky to still have triggeer control in my right hand but can't flex my wrist to shoot a standard pistol grip on a rifle. I worked around this by buying a Bushmaster m-16 look alike and put a J&T 6.8 SPC flat top upper with a free float 16 inch barrel, put a Leopold VX3 3.5 to 10 scope on top and installed a Chip McCormick trigger. The rifle will shoot half inch groups at 100 yards using Silver State Pro hunter 110 grain ammo. So far in the past 2 hunting seasons I have taken 9 deer ,all one shot kills from 25 to 300 yards. If someone had told me a rifle of that type and caliber would shoot that well and kill the way it does I would have found it hard to believe. I would like to know if anone elce has had such luck with the 6.8 SPC. Thanks, Lance from Virginia

oh yeah, 6.8 should be a great deer whitetail cartridge. I haven't shot a deer with one, but I certainly wouldn't poo-poo it.

***Slight hi-jack*** Is it true that the effective range of the 6.8 is no longer than 300 yards. anyone? I too have a AR chambered in that caliber and wanted to use it during next deer season...I was wondering about its effective range, because I will be hunting mulies in the Idaho high country....Thread hi-jacking over.....;)

The 6.8 at 100 yards is the same as a .270 at 300. I personally wouldn't use the 6.8 at 300 yards because I want at least 1000 ft/lbs at point of impact. I'm not looking for an argument, that's just what feels right to me.

Woof, I wondered myself if I would be asking to much from this round. The shots that I have taken have been either neck shots or broadside through the lungs, all Deer have been standing still and I make sure I have a good rest. I must say I am very impressed with the pass through lung shots and the performane of the light bullet, all Deer die within 80 yards. I also think that 300 yards is my max range and only under ideal shot conditions. Thank you all for your responce and would welcome any additional information or views. Thanks again, Lance

If it drops below 1000 ft lbs past 200 yards, it sure the heck ain't no .270!

Fine on deer, though. I haven't killed many deer past 200 yards. I wouldn't carry it in open country, but then, I wouldn't carry my .357 carbine in open country and I've killed deer with it. That gun is 100 yards and in.

A quick check shows a 110-grain bullet at 2,600 ft/sec. Seems to me that oughta do Bad Things to Bambi, with the usual caveat about proper hit, etc. It ain't a Ma Bell load, but it oughta do for probably 90% of all deer shooting.

+1 on the 6.8SPC on deer...

I have a custom built, light weight, 18 1/2" bbl, on a 700 action in 6.8 and LOVE it for deer hunting. This was my first deer season using the caliber, but between myself and friends, my gun took quite a few deer this year. I limit my self to 250 yard shots on deer with various 115 grain bullets....You made a good point about recoil. It is pretty much non-existent and I would put it close to a .22-250 in perceived recoil. On all of my shots, I have seen the "impact". Also, even on the shorter barrel it is not THAT loud. It does not cause my ears to ring like other cartridges. If you haven't tried one, you will be very impressed with it's performance. I love mine and totally recommmend a 6.8 SPC regardless if it is a bolt action or AR-15.
