6.8 spc buck opening day!

Here's my big nine. I got him yesterday at 7:30 a.m. One shot with the 6.8 I built. Shot distance was about 80 yards and his heart was destroyed. He went about 60 yards after the shot, then ran into a tree and that was it.

Some specs on the gun:

dpms upper receiver
dpms spec 2 16" barrel
smith and wesson lower
rra trigger group
model 1 sales free float tube
nikko stirling 3-9x42 scope
ar stoner 10 round mag
center point high rings
hornady 120 gr sst factory load
the gun shoots a .5" group at 100 yards on a bad day

My son was so excited he didn't stop talking about it all day and he wasn't even there when I shot it! He will be with me next time though!

thanks! I've had the gun for 3 years now. This is the first deer its taken. It's taken a couple of foxes before though.

Very nice. I would really like to put together a rig like that. I wish ARs were legal for hunting in Canada.
6.8 performed well?

6.8 did very well he was down in a total of probably 3 seconds. It was a complete pass through other than the jacket which I still have in perfect mushroom shape. Where I'm at you can hunt with an ar but no more than 10 rounds at a time. If you need more than 10 you shouldn't be deer hunting.

I got this nice 7pt buck on Sunday around 8:50am. He was coming straight down a hill directly towards me in my stand. I took they shot when he was at 45 yards, only slightly turned from head on to me. Hit in front of the left shoulder. Bullet took out the lower part of the heart. The shot knocked him down, he got up, slowly moved about 25 yards and expired.

Rifle is a Marlin XS7 in 243 with a Nikon Buckmaster scope. I load my own ammo, 95gr Hornady SST at 3010fps. Bullet blew up, no exit, but I didn't expect one at the angle I took. Only fragments recovered. Did its job nicely, but probably would take a true shoulder shot, but was devastating on soft tissue.

Congrats to the both of you!

Hunting in jeans and and a blue denim jacket. And the buck was just 45 yards away. Our grandfathers never even had camo wear. Makes me wonder if all that camo I have was a waste of money...seriously.

That's how it works. Just be still don't move and be patient is my creedo. It's best if you have some cover such as a bush or tree trunk.

I love my 6.8 SPC out here for coyotes! Believe it or not but the 115gr Sierra Matchking puts down them dogs in a heartbeat!

I was planning on using it for deer in 2010 but moved to Arizona before the season opened.

Thanks! I bet that matchking does the trick alright. I plan on trying a the majority of bullets that are made for this caliber. I have been planning a 87 grain barnes x bullet or something similar. The 120's worked great but they are a bit slow for my taste.

Thanks! I don't have a proper scale for weighing him. I didn't enter him in any contests either. However I managed to save the back straps, left front quarter, and hind quarters. So about 40 lbs. of pure meat. It'll be steaks, sausage, and jerky soon. I'll do all the processing myself as I usually do.

Congrats! Pics show it all - exactly how I know I flat out missed last year with my 6.8.

MO gun season starts tomorrow with temps in the 70's and gusts to 35mph. Sunday, temps dropping to 30 and rain. Typical Missouri, if you don't like the weather, just wait a day and it will change. Then you can dislike the other extreme.
