I'm thinking of getting some defensive rounds rather than just FMJ.

These would not be used in home defense, so I'm not concerned with over penetration, anything like that.

I've been looking at the Hornady V-Max, which is supposed to be extremely accurate, and have nice expansion. (however I have been able to find no pictures of an expanded V-max bullet and wish I could). I have also seen some people saying that they should only be used for varmints, however the 6.8 SPC V-max bullet is 110 grains, which is pretty much the common standard for any 6.8 round I can find.

So, opinions?

Whatever Silver State Armory has, I understand that they are about the king of the hill for anything 6.8 related.

I think the 6.8 is one of those calibers that would be hard to load incorrectly for, so long as it isn't FMJ, much like the .40 S&W and .357 Magnum in the handgun arena.

Look for the new 95 gr hollowpoints. IIRC there is a group buy going on there.

I use factory Hornady 110gr BTHP/WC. I've measured 2665 fps when fired from my AR15A2 fitted with a 20" DPMS 1:11 bbl. It's an accurate load. See: http://www.hornady.com/store/6.8mm-SPC-110-gr-BTHP-with-Cannelure/

The intended "mission" of my 6.8 is to provide security in the aftermath of a hurricane, in which I might have to shoot through light barriers (automobile windshields & sheetmetal) and the Hornady 110gr BTHP/WC has been tested against these materials and performs well. I'm unaware of any similar tests with the Hornady 110gr V-Max.

Good luck.

Thanks for the info.

...for some reason I still haven't gotten the email to confirm my account on the 68forum.

FWIW, I shot a deer in the shoulder with a 110gr Pro-Hunter in 2005. It pulverized everything in that shoulder, then poked through and bounced around the chest cavity, with no exit wound. I would have prefered something with more penetration. I loaded up some of the 110gr TSXs as a correction but didn't have a chance to shoot them into game.

Silver State also produces a 115gr. Sierra open tip match that I would assume is intended more for target, but would most likely produce the stated desired effect as a defensive round. I picked up a half dozen boxes last week for my LMT 6.8 and hope to at least see how they perform accuracy-wise this weekend at the range.

As an added thought, the more I work with the 6.8 the more impressed I am with the cartridge. And SSA seems to make a high quality factory product.
