I stopped by a shop today and handled a new model 45 Colt, 4 5/8". No box or papers and it was nickel plated and had what I believe are stag grips. It looks like it's a stainless model that someone nickel plated. Unfortunately, the cylinder has a rather large chip of nickel that is missing. Otherwise it looks like it wasn't shot much. I made an offer that was rejected and was wondering what's reasonable.

I've been wanting a 45 Colt for a while. They also had a Colt DA45 that was refinished for $500. I was not very impressed with the DA trigger on it, seemed gummed up and appeared to have machine marks on it. I 'm not sure if the machine marks are due to it being made during war times or if it was a crap refinish job. The lettering was very crisp, but the pony seemed a little worn. It also locked up tight. It looks like the one below, but I really think it's been refinished:

Let me say I am sorry I didn't take pictures to share. I'd appreciate any thoughts on them and if they are still there next week, I will probably go with cash in hand to make another offer.

My EDC Blackhawk .45 convertible, '86 manufacture, with Sambar Stag grips... Never been much for Nickel guns though, scratches just seem to jump out at you.

Paid $550 on this one used, the grips were just too good to pass up. $200-350 for well fit genuine Sambar grips and Sambar isn't being exported from India anymore. Few "plum" spots on the pistol, and I just love the flawed coloration personally.

Other Stag grips just not as valuable, so that seems a bit high on that particular Ruger, but that's just me.

Love the .45 colt round, expensive little bugger if you don't reload.

No hands-on experience with Colt pistols though. someone else I'm sure will help you there.

Thanks, I am a reloader, already have the dies, brass and bullets for longer than I should admit too. I'm not a hunter so it's really a range toy. I reload for accuracy not power, so I'm not necessarily in need of the extra strength of the Ruger.

I did think the Ruger was priced too high too, but he didn't like my $450 plus tax offer. I'm going to spend some time reading about the Colt DA and maybe focus on that one.

If they're still there next week, I'll add pictures to this link, buy or no buy.

I'd steer clear of a refinished Colt 1917 for $500 too.
Especially if the trigger pull is funky feeling.

You can't get those fixed very many places anymore.

Thanks RC very much, not just for your comments on this thread but all that I have learned from you over the years I've been here.

I will keep looking somewhere else.

my 1973 ruger .45 colt with .45 acp cylinder with stag grips. i shoot hard cast 255gr bullets at 1000fps,hitting a quart can at 100yds is easy. i have never shot a 45 acp out of it,i guess i should soon. eastbank.

BTW Jimfern

If the Colt you loooked at was chambered in .45 Colt, it was not a M-1917.
All M-1917's were chambered in .45 ACP.

It would have to be a commercial New Service, or M-1909 Army if it was a .45 Colt.
