I am looking at the SW 629 and really like the smoothness and overall feel of the gun, but.........as much as I love Hogue grips, the factory Hogue grips just seem to be too thin for that gun. I was looking at a nickel 29 with the wood grips (thicker than the Hogue) and the gun felt fantastic! Any suggestions on grips for the 629? Has anyone else felt the same way I do about the feel of the Hogues on it? Thanks.....

I agree with you about the Hogues feeling way too narrow. This spring I picked up one of the 29 Mountain Guns. It came with the Hogues and a set of cocobolo Ahrends finger groove grips. The wood grips fill the hand well and feel great as long as I'm shooting loads in the .44 special range, which is what I really bought it for. Just last week I decided to shoot some real magnum loads in it just out of curiosity. I might carry it hunting this fall. :what: OWWWW! After every shot I was checking the web of my thumb for blood. That exposed back strap has GOT to go before deer season gets here, so I ordered a sat of Pachmayr Decelerator Grippers which should arrive today sometime. Yeah, yeah...I know how they look.:barf: I bought a used Redhawk that had them on. If they get here as scheduled, I'll get back with a range report.

A range report would be great! I thought about Pachmyer's as well. They do tend to be thicker. Hey - Whne you get em on can you post a picture? Thanks......

Pachmayr makes a square butt Presentation grip to fit the
round butt of the N frame 625 and 29. I have recently
replaced both these and they fit perfectly. I like them.

Get the Ahrends wood grips, they fit perfect in my hands :D

Hi, Worli. Here's the pictures of the Pachmayrs. They just arrived this evening. I should be able to try them out sometime tommorrow. They're much narrower than I thought they'd be. Nice palm swell. Very soft rubber.

Pappy - Thanks for the pictures...nice looking.

I really apreciate all of the responses I've received............Thanks!!

Keep the suggestions and pix coming........they're great!

Is your 629 a new production gun, with round butt, an older one, with square butt?

I really like Hogues, myself, and find they work fine for me, even with heavy .44's. I have bought a Ruger .480, and will put Hogues on it, too.

The Ahrends wood grips also feel very nice on late model guns, but I'm skeptical about them with hard kicking loads.

On older Smith, there are many choices.

For my M27, I recently found on Ebay a set of the Smith "combat finger groove" stocks, that they sold a few years ago. They didn't make many for N frames, and I hope they'll be great on my M27

THAT is a most beautiful picture..............If you like TRUE beauty, click on the link above.

Sheesh.... I finally got some time to get to the range and check out those new Pachmayrs.
Well, as much as I love the look of the Ahrends that came with my Mountain Gun, I think that the Pachys are gonna hafta stay on.
They made the 1000 fps 240 gr loads that stung me the other week feel just like the 750 fps plinking loads that I was used to shooting with the Ahrends. Very functional! And I guess they could look worse.

Pappy - Since you used both, are the Pachmyrs "thick" enough? This is m whole concern with the Hougues, they feel too thin on the 629 to me. Let me know...........Worli

I just mic'ed out both and found that they are both about the same in width, both at the palm swell and above and below the swell, though the swell is placed slightly lower in the Pach's. The biggest difference is in the front to back dimension....almost 2 tenths of an inch more width between the two red dots and the two green dots in the pic than the same points on the Hogues. This is where it seems to fill the hand more and gives a slightly longer trigger reach. But like I said....based on just width, its a toss-up.
