had to wear a shirt and tie today and found that my two carry options (iwb and pocket) would not work. So the whole time was out i was thinking about ankle carry.

both good and bad points of holsters appreciated

on a side note where did alessi's holster website move too?

thanks all

edit: forgot to mention this is for a 642ct

last resort?

i find that if I can't carry my .45 (or i'm too lazy to carry it) then I carry my j-frame in a desantis nemesis pocket holster. with lighter dress pants, no jacket, i don't like to pocket carry, so ankle carry is my last option. i know it's not the fastest draw, but i'd rather have my gun on me, than at home or in the car.

i think adding an ankle holster to the inventory provides a good option when IWB or pocket carry are not convenient. a family member of mine carries his glock 27 ankle holster most of the time for backup. a j-frame carries very nice too.

I have carried my 642 on the ankle quite a bit. I used a Galco Ankle Holster with the calf strap. It worked very well. My irritation was having the side of the holster rub on the "ball" of my ankle/foot joint. Its of course better than nothing.

I wear a shirt and tie everyday, but not any cover jacket. I have resorted to pocket carry of my 642 in a Galco Pocket Horsehide holster. It works great.

For what its worth, i have also carried a G26 in the same type of ankle holster..same result. Better than nothing, but it often irritated that spot on my ankle joint.

I carry every day (S&W M49 or M38) in a Renegade ankle holster. Comfortable, concealable, easy to reach when seated at a desk or in a vehicle, works with any type of trouser, pant, jeans and you don't sweat much on your ankle. It's slower than some other carry options but all require practice so for an ankle rig just practice a little more. One last selling point that I like is that I can always pull my M38 or M49 out of my ankle rig and put it in my pocket if I decide I feel the need for more immediate access. On the flip side if your using a belt holster or IWB and have to shed your coat/jacket or shirt what do you do, stick your gun in your sock? Same goes for taking a dump in a public john. While I don't make it a practice when you gotta go you gotta go. Would you rather have your gun concealed but even more accessible than ever on your ankle or pulling your waistband down onto that, oh so clean floor around the commode?

I've heard that the Renegade is one of the most comfortable, but how high up on the calf can you wear it?

I don't wear high-water slacks, but my desk faces outward into a showroom and I worry that I'll be 'made' while seated since my legs are in full view.

We're not supposed to carry at work but after working for myself for over 25 years and setting my own rules a minor thing like that isn't going to stop me. :D

jt1 - We also have meetings 'in the round' at tables facing each other and drive golf carts around with customers too. It just may be possible that an ankle rig simply won't work for my situation.

The Renegade rocks....even fits inside my half boots...couldn't do it with a molded rig...I also wear straight leg levis without a bulge....

mikeb3185 - Bad point's are very slow and obvious when drawing from a standing position. Really good point is great for drawing when sitting in a chair or while buckled up in a car. I am thinking also good for a back up and could be good if you end up on the deck in a fight.

Serpico - On the Renegade rig, do you have to unsnap the retention strap or can you just pull through? I have also heard good things about this holster.

I have been looking at this Bianchi for use a a back-up holster or when seated. anyone used it? I would probably replace the retention strap on any ankle holster with elastic or velcro that you could pull through and not have to unsnap.

Bianchi 4750 Ranger Triad Ankle Holster
This Bianchi Ankle Holster is a unique design which features a wraparound center compression strap that can be tightened to ensure a firm fit, holding the gun and holster in place for a consistent draw. An adjustable, high-density foam ankle pad provides excellent comfort by cushioning the ankle bone and allowing the holster to be placed exactly where you want it on the leg. The Triad features an elasticized retention strap with easy pull tab for quick, easy access to your firearm. Intended to be worn on the inside of the leg.

I have the Triad. It works well enough. The cushioning pad is nice, but I found that it really adds to the bulk of the holster. There is enough padding even with it removed. I've worn it for 8hrs at a time and I'm always happy to take it off. I may end uop trying the Galco with the calf strap next.

You can order the Renegade with either a pull through strap (you can still unsnap it to put the firearm in the holster) or a conventional snap type retention strap. It probably depends on the size of your calf but since it's an ankle holster it's not gonna ride/stay too high up. I've found that if your wearing dark trousers and black socks and shoes any part of the holster visible under your pant leg tens to disappear. Some of the fleece like backing may poke out but you can either trim it off or maybe use a black magic marker to color it. Very, very nice holster.
