Big B, 2RCO, Person, jhco - Welcome to the 642 Club.
Camjr - hey...
Nem - The LCR is quite interesting but has a long way to go before I would consider it for CC. I have not fired one yet, handled one for a few minutes, It seems OK, we will see. The traditional Ruger products are quite excellent.
Big B, Person - I take it from your post that this is a NITB gun. This type of damage is not consistent with a new gun or flame front erosion. I also see some damage in the crane recess area and some roughness on the forcing cone that is probably due to poor cylinder/yoke fitting. Inspect the fitting of these parts and the clearance between the cylinder and forcing cone and the face of the cylinder for contact wear. The top strap damage appears to be mechanical damage. It is possible it left the factory in this condition, or ?...
Flame cutting does not appear to be a significant issue in the X42's, but can be with excessive cyl/forcing cone gap.
You can expect finish damage in this area due to use and flame/gas heat
, however it normally starts as a small area in the middle of the strap and slowly extends outward in both directions and can be considered normal wear and tear. Both my clearcoat 642 and non-clearcoat 442 exhibit this wear.
In your case the news is good either way...If the fitting and cylinder gap are OK at this point the damage is cosmetic only and as
DA indicated, is not an issue. If there is a fit/alignment issue it can be easily corrected.
At any rate S&W has excellent warranty service and free shipping both ways. It is unfortunate that some guns get shipped in this condition but it happens, we have seen all manner of problems here but all have be resolved by the company.
S&W is aware of the limitations of the 642 clearcoat finish (which is really quite durable with proper care) and will refinish under warranty any clearcoat damage upon request
