Amazing!

Well after 150 or so days of waiting for my Texas CHL, DPS has told me that it has been approved and is currently being printed and soon to ship out. Not bad.

So I go down to a local gun shop that opened maybe a year ago, if that. I've been in there once before just to check out the place but never bought anything. I walk in today and ask if they have any Concealed Holsters for inside the waist. Sure enough the owner walks me right up to the wall and has dozens of different ones. We find me a Holster for my 642 and tells me about the company and that it has a lifetime warranty. Figured i'd give it a try as it came recommended and it looked real good. (its a crossbreed holster www.crossbreedholsters.com) So then we start talking a little bit about guns (of course) and I start looking through his selection. HOLY COW! He was stocked! Apart from that, he had ammo, quite a bit of it, in just about every caliber you were looking for. I asked him if he had a Walther P99 in stock and he asked me 9mm or 40 cause he had both. He brought them both out and showed me several of its features and showed me that that was actually what he carried (and proceeded to lift up his shirt)

I hear so many bad stories about little local gun stores but...he seems to be doing real well. I can't believe how hes been able to keep things in stock and his prices seem dead on with internet prices from what I could tell.

Anyways, The biggest amazement I had was the fact that he had IWB holsters. Every online store/manufacturer for concealed holsters seems to be backordered 6 weeks or more. This guy had a great one sitting right there on his shelf!

Tomorrow I'm going shooting. Heck, i couldn't leave shop without picking up a couple hundred rounds of 38's when it seemed everywhere else has been sold out since the ice age!

watchtower7 - Just a suggestion. One of the reasons this thread/club has been so successful and hasn't been victimized by off-topic postings, member rantings, and inappropriate postings is because we stay on topic - 642s and their ilk. If you want to post your political beliefs, opinions of Ms Palin (or any other politician/person/issue/etc.) there are plenty of other forums and sites to do so.

Agree! But post should have been directed to DaveB357 as well.

Rawb77,

Congrats on your CHL!
I've been hearing alot of good things about the crossbreed. Please share your thoughts after you've had it a while?

Thanks

JD

I just got my first 642 on Saturday.:D Neat little pocket blaster. I already shot 250rds through it. I had no idea shooting 100rds of.38+p could make you sore the next day. My super high grip probably had something to do with that though. After i got done i put it in my pocket still hot and ready for duty. There was a great feeling about that. Revolvers have soul and character! even the little j frames.:D

I can't wait for winter for what i consider the jframes ultimate role. Jacket pocket carry. Great tactical advantage being able to shoot through pockets.

Welcome to the new members.

I've been away, dealing with pressing issues of business and truck repair, trying to scrum away a few days (unsuccessfully) to take a long weekend backpack with my 642 in tow (hey, it's my lightest gun, and I'm not afraid of bears on the trail, but human vermin.)

I know all will be well as we move on. ;)
Well, said, MSAA.

Carry on, smoke em, or get a patch if you'd rather quit. :)

Well I got my 642 back from S&W. I haven't shot it yet. Besides the cosmetic damage I did trying to get the squib out it looks good. Also I got a used 442-2 ( Abut 50 rounds) With IWB holster for $325 Not bad.

hey hoghead, were u asking me about the grips? if so, this is not my gun. i got this pic from the SW website on their new products. i'll probably look in to this one with the ported barrel for my wife.

Well after much deliberation, reading and digesting all the great information on (this forum), fondling both the 642 and all of it's competition models I made my decision. Went to the Gun show in Westmoreland County. PA this morning. Naturally stopped at all the sites that had the 642 available memorized prices and there stand numbers. Finally (after 2 hours) returned to the second table and purchased my 642 (Hurraw). Can you believe that it turned out that vendor has a shop 6 miles from my home!!!! Final price $440.00. I am so looking forward to the range next week. Thank you all for all your input that helped me to this decision.

Broken, shipped, fixed

Thought I'd share my 442-2 no-lock repair story.

I bought it used from a shop a mile or so from my apartment in Seattle. After putting ~500 rounds through it, I noticed a few things.

The rifling of the barrel was off-center and possibly not on-axis. The cylinder began to develop end-shake. The timing of one of the chambers was off (the cylinder didn't lock before hammer dropped). The hammer did not appear to be protruding from the body that much (I had nothing to compare it to at the time). Worst of all, it began to misfire about every 5th bullet!

I called S&W up and they said they'd send me a packing slip in the mail. It took TWO WEEKS for it to arrive -- apparently the slip just sat in their offices for 10 days for some random reason. Bah!

Got the slip, packed the gun up, received it maybe a week later. They had fixed everything that I listed. Replaced the barrel, cylinder, firing pin. Even replaced a the chamber/yoke screw that I had stripped from using tapered bits on.

Works like a charm now. Currently NO endshake at all... it is in there quite tight, but at the same time there's no problem with rotation or loading/unloading.

Well just couldn't wait til next week (as you might have expected). 75 rounds down range with my new (yesterday) 642. Started with (50) 38 spls and finished with (25) Gold Dot +P. Because I have never fired anything less than a 4" barrel I decided to start at seven feet then worked back to 21 feet. I am pleased to report that 71 rounds in the 8" circle. Can't explain the other four perhaps fatigue set in OR?? I am also pleased with the stock grips they fit my not so large hand very comfortably. Thanks for listning.

Hey Dynawhite welcome and congrats on your new purchase good price but long wait (sorry for that) you will love it report back please when you get your hands on it at the range.

442 commemorative (no lock)

I was wondering what (if any) differences there are with the 442 and the 442 heller commemorative (these will be no lock versions). Besides the heller vs dc art.

I just found this thread while searching on a handgun I just bought.

I am sad to post that I was not able to join the 642 club at this time.

I have been looking for a 642 for over six weeks now, to no avail. Today I stopped by a police firearms supply shop and found a 638-3. I am a contractor for the Department of Energy (DOE) and am able to purchase at the store. (I don't know the full story on that, but you must be a cop or government related to buy there...)

Long story short, I now have a 638. The difference between the two seems to be the hammer. As you all know, the 642 has an exclosed hammer. The 638 has a shrouded hammer. It is covered enough not to hang up on clothing, but can still be cocked with your thumb.

I have not read all 100+ pages but have got the idea that discussion of non 642/442 revolvers is strictly verboten!

Fine! I guess I'll have to go and start my own club! :) Sniff...Sniff... Whaaaaaa! :D

WhooHooo!

I plan on trying it out this weekend. I have a box of 50 Winchester JHP +P rounds and a box of 25 Remington HPJ (High Performance Jacketed) +P for carry ammo. I cannot find any non +P ammo. I wanted to start out with non +p to get used to my first revolver, then shoot some +p to see the difference. I guess I'll just shoot the Winchesters.

Eventually the gun will go to my mom as a birthday present from my brother and I. I want to shoot it for the obvious selfish reasons and so that I can get it broken in for her.

I got here a black leather CCW carry purse with a velcro pocket in the side seam a while back. The revolver will work perfectly from there. I wanted a 642 to allow no issue shots from inside of the purse if needed. The shrouded hammer 638 was as close as I could find.
