P.S. I had to go to 6 shops to find ammo. I thought this shortage crap was over.

For three years I bought all my range ammo at Wal Mart. White or Green Box.

I have been to over 10 Wal Marts in FL, TN and GA. None have had either in at least a year. Sux.

I ran into a good supply of Remington UMC .38 spl 130 gr at Bass Pro a couple of months ago which was a pleasant surprise.

I was at Gander Mountain last week and to my surprise they had COR BON DPX .38 spl Plus P 110 gr. Wow great.......$48 for a box of 20.:barf:

A precautionary tale…

I knew better, I even told myself to stop, spend the few extra minutes and get the proper equipment…but no I said, it will be fine, just a quick drive down to the local station

Thanks for the anecdotal reminder. And you a "trained professional"!! ;)
Just shows to go ya.

I always have my knife, not always my light but I am getting better about carrying it during the day. Just something about going out at high noon and putting a light in the pocket.

That's why I am adding some diversity to my EDC light lineup.

I have so much crap in my pockets when wearing standard pants (right side pocket carry) everything has to go in the left; overloaded. Otherwise when I am off the professional circuit I walk around looking like 5.11 dude. ;) Ahh. Pockets to spare and the knife can go back to the strong side. It's hard to be discrete and loaded for bear.

I was just thinking yesterday while wearing a pair of Columbia Landers while OTJ what great pants they are. Not too tactical; that fantastic zippered deep carry pocket behind the standard pocket and a right (strong side for me) discrete leg pocket for a knife or light. I was at a REI a couple months ago a picked up another pair in a color I didn't have.

Now when wearing a sport shirt with a pocket I can EDC a light 1 or 2X AAA like a pen. A whopping 175 lumens from a pen light ah technology.

I bought my 642 with factory-installed CT grips. Cost was about $70 less than buying the gun and then adding the grips (at the lowest online price I could find). I believe the laser would be very helpful in a self defense situation when split seconds count and there is no time to get a good sight picture. If I hadn't planned to carry the 642 at least part of the time, I probably wouldn't have spent the additional money.

Hello my good friends

Hello my good friends,
It has been quite awhile since I’ve participated. I have happily been carrying my S&W 642 with a CT for years now. This forum was instrumental in helping me select the perfect carry weapon and accessories years ago. I just ordered a Smart Carry since I started jogging again. I am looking forward to catching up. God Bless you all and the USA!

Happy Veteran’s Day!

Respectfully,

cpalmer777

It's also been a while since I posted. My S&W 442 is still serving me well.
I just saw some posts about the ammo shortage and just wanted to remind everyone about some online deals.
I just got 100 rounds of Speer Gold Dot .38SPL +P 125gr for $60 bucks shipped.
Not short barrel and I personally like 135gr but not being picky.
The website is www.ammunitiontogo.com
On my doorstep right at a week.
Hope this helps, and Happy Birthday Marines

LightningJoe - Welcome to the 642 Club. We're happy to have you here with us. Now about that trigger, as with most things X42 we have been there before:

The MIM process is here:

DieselvRR - Yes...but it is no longer a concern to me, a little wear here, a scratch or two there...it's all good

Sighting in Crimson Trace Laser on 642

Has anyone used the Bullshooter pistol vice to sight in the 642 CT laser?

Also do you know if the LaserLyte Universal Laser Boresighter will work in a J Frame? Their web site isn't very clear on that. http://www.laserlyte.com/Laser_Bore_Sighter/LBS-0006-140/index.html

The cartridge boresight laser by Sightmark hasn't received very good reviews. Are there any other cartridge type bore lasers out there that will work in the 642?

We want to sight in our 642CT for a 7 yd POI.

Appreciate your input.

Erik M welcome and are you in trouble now!!

Ill have to start educating myself on j frames now since i know nothing about revolvers.

Just do couple of "searches" on snub nosed revolvers, S&W J Frames etc,. You will find hours of reading.

about sighting in CT grips on carry guns:

First things first: You may not need to do any sighting in. Most people report their CT grips are "close", and a few have even reported them as being (nominally) on POA.

Second, there is the issue of using a fixed / gripping rest when you sight it in. These are excellent devices for determining inherent accuracy, no doubt--but they are not necessarily so good for sorting out where your shots land when firing in hand--IOW, how your muscles react to the recoil.

Unless you are absolutely unskilled at shooting revolvers, I suggest you at least just mount the CT grip but not turn it on, assume a good isoceles / weaver (two-handed) stance, aim at a target 7-10 yards away, stroke carefully--and release. Shoot a cylinderfull or two to see where you shoot--then turn on the laser and, using that dot, see where the group shows up on a new target.

At 7 yards, I will bet that they are within two inches of each other. See the CT manual and tweak accordingly.

I wouldn't take that bet. ;)

I know where mine will land, in a static world. In a dynamic world :uhoh:

$150 sounds awfully cheap for the LG-405's but about right for LG-105's. I went with the 405's and paid around $220. What I like best is the extra bit of rubber where the web of the hand used to get slapped by the backstrap. Worth the extra money IMO.

Hello club members! Checking back in after a long absence too.

A little update on my 642: I learned the hard way that taking a fall and landing on the 642 in your pocket aint so good for your lower back OR the 642. After some stretching exercises and some Advil, I was fine. My 642 will need a little more TLC though: even with the gun in full lock up, the entire cylinder and crane assembly wobbles side to side about .002". I think I may have bent the crane :(.

Kinda frustrating, as I don't carry the little pocket protector as often as I used to, so the odds of something like that happening were significantly slimmer.

Oh well, guess it'll be going back to S&W. Finally got a set of feeler gauges, something I'd been lacking. The cylinder gap of my 642 is running about .009", a little on the big side, so I'll ask S&W to adjust that as well, maybe get it closer to .004.

I'll let everyone know how my experience with S&W's customer service goes.

Once I get it back, I'd like to try painting the rear sight notch with some black oil-based paint (ie, hobby paint). I already painted the top of the front tip gold, which helps quite a bit IMO.

Good to see everyone again!

Hey fellas,

New 642 owner checking in. Picked up my first revolver this weekend at the fun show, new 642, built in lock (didn't know that was an issue til I stumbled across this thread), $399 plus tax. Real neat gun, excited to go put some holes in some targets. Have a few semi-autos (Glock 27, kel tek .380) as well as a RRA AR-15 and a few shotguns. Decided it was time to go to the dark side

Picked up a box of Federal Hydroshock 110 gr as well for defense, didn't do any research so let me know what you think. Probably won't use this as a carry gun but wanted something simpler to keep around the house since my wife will be staying around the house full time when our first kid is born in a few months. We'll see if I can get her out to the range. May be a lost cause.

Anyway, neat thread, thanks for all the good info.
