Do you prefer that method of carry to pocket carry? How comfortable is it when you are sitting? It's always looked like it would be a problem, but you never know, it might be the answer to pants with shallow pockets. A friend of mine actually saw the grip of my M&P 340 last night at band practice as I was sitting beside him in a chair. I was busy playing my horn and not paying attention and the grip was sticking out of the top of my pocket. He already knew I carried most of the time, but that was the first time I have ever been "made". It made me think that maybe I need something besides the Mika for short pockets. I guess I could lengthen the pocket depth by adding a piece to it.

...I was busy playing my horn...

B'man - All this time I always assumed Brassman related to reloading...guess I shouldn't be suprised, back when we were doing the "faces of THR" thread I was always somewhat off on my perception of screen personna vs real people. The only one I got right was fiVe, he just looked so...kiNgly...

Anyway, back to the question of the Smartcarry. When I am out and about wearing regular clothes I prefer Mika, what I really like about pocket carry is you can have your hand in your pocket with a full combat grip and nobody will think anything about it. I think you will draw quite a bit of attention with a full combat grip using the Smartcarry. However, the Smartcarry does have it's place, it is very comfortable under all conditions and once you get used to it and get it located and adjusted to your prefered location you will forget all about it, at least with the small j-frame, I don't really notice the difference between having one or two X42's in mine after a few minutes. You really could use this with any type of clothing and it would work well (except for the slower draw compared to a Mika) but I use it primarly when wearing sweat/running pants and a t-shirt. It is really great for pants without a belt as access is good and even a j-frame will pull down your pants without a belt. Most of the time when I am at home I wear sweat pants and a quick run to the store or whatever is perfect with the Smartcarry. More than once I have had to stop my exercise routine and remove the Smartcarry because I forgot I had it on when I started. This would also be perfect if you must wear dress pants without a jacket as it is very, very concealable and would be my choice if I could not risk being made for whatever reason. I think I will be using it quite a lot during the summer as well with elastic waisted shorts.

In case you missed it here is my original review.

Hey guys, just got me a model 442 and I'm going to use it for a back up gun as soon as I get a holster for it. My main service weapon is a Sig P228 or a XD40 on my strong side in a G&G thumb break holster for either. I was considering getting a SoB holster for the 442 or maybe a pocket holster. Anyone got any suggestions for a very concealed carry? I know its probably been covered, but I'd like some specific answers, haha. Thanks guys!

BTW, I looked at the smart carry and I'm considering it, but I wear mostly blue jeans whenever I'm awake, lol.

I'll not always carry both guns, but if I need a very concealed weapon then I want to be able to leave a big gun in the truck and just carry my .38.

skarpenz - Welcome to the 642 Club. It's good to have you with us. My favorite carry for the X42 is in a Mika round cut pocket holster. Many here use it and it works well, for BU you could carry in your weak side pocket. The good thing about pocket carry is you could just switch from weak to strong side pocket if you want to use the X42 as a primary. If a IWB will work for you G&G has a convertible one that will work either left or right for the j-frame, I think it's the Gold Line 810, tried one once but IWB is not good for me, it was a nice holster though. A lot of folks here are now looking at different pocket holsters and carry options so you should be hearing more soon. Read around here a little and you will see quite a bit of good information.

Pocket Carry

jt1, You are such a .... what are the words I am looking for "suck-up" comes to mind. :D

Southern Exposure. Pardon me but your X42 is showing.

jt1 & Brassman-

I was walking the dog this morning wearing an el cheapo pair of "Columbia" style cargo's. The style with the zip offs and carrying the 340/405 CT grips in the Mika roundcut.
I noticed I was "slightly exposed". :eek::what:
That normally doesn't happen and I was wondering why? :scrutiny:
I came to the conclusion that until recently I had the 340 in the DeSantis Nemesis and the 642 in the Mika. I recall doing some measuring a while back on a post regarding the relative size merits of the two. The Mika sits about 3/8th of an inch taller in the pocket.

PB090004.jpg

Just enough to keep it exposed while standing. Sitting it may not matter, in the pants a I had on today the entire grip would be hanging out.

Guess I will have to stick to the Columbia Lander pants. Those things have very deep pockets. They also have that zippered pocket which is deep. There is no way an X42 in a Mika is going to be seen hanging out of those while zippered. You can leave it unzipped while walking.

P7260004-1.jpg

See the almost hidden pocket with the pull tab on the zipper.

Lander.jpg

The Lander has a pocket over a pocket. Oversized zippered pocket with pull tab to carry the snub. And over that is a regular pocket for other goods.

These are available at most sporting goods stores and don't have a heavy duty cargo look. They do have a nice small leg pocket for a folding knife, but other than that, no large cargo/big button pockets. No elastic in the waist for that "old man big gut look" and the pocket is not sewn in which allows heavy items to hang down while sitting instead of allowing things to come falling out like a sewn in pocket.

Guess you haven't tried these or we wouldn't be having this conversation. Jeesh, no one ever listens to me. :neener: Wish they came in Navy. Trust me on this. I read Esquire (to keep up with haute coutere), Outdoors, and shop every hiking, Bass Pro, Cabellas, Gander there is, always seeking the holy grail in carry slacks ... the Lander is it for now. I do like the SIG gear pants, but they look too "taktikal" aka sometimes out of place looking cargos, which have their place, but their regular pockets ain't that great and are often sewn in.

The other solution is a Scottee Vest or other some such vests for the carry purpose. Or.....the......dreaded......"manbag". :uhoh:

Suck-up? Me? If I were trying to suck-up I surely would have mentioned FiVe's lovely wife and handsome sons. :neener:

New shoes :)

Nice Bantams

Looks like Ebony and Ivory went to the Hogue Shop for...
New shoes
;
Now you need to photo that well hung denim jockstrap again. :D

Diggers-
Hey my pants! (they come in greenish color too.)
Don't get overly excited. I misreprented the pants with a pair of shorts that came in a darker taupey color. I will check my wardrobe though it seems that there is more than one color. Light kahki.

If I were trying to suck-up I surely would have mentioned FiVe's lovely wife and handsome sons.
No, no, you mean lovely queen and handsome princes. :p

Nice new shoes. Starting to look like salt and peppa.

We still need those twins holding those instead of squirt guns.

I'm reluctant to target practice with dozens of "uncoated" lead ammo. I'd like to minimize the "leading" of the barrel on my 642.

I prefer FMJ rounds.

Am I thinking clearly about this?

What say you?

Another cpuntry heard from

Just happened upon the thread as I have been absent from THR for a long time.

I have used J frames for years and have carried them in numerous foreign lands as well as in the USA.

Currently retired but still manage to own a 642, 340PD, and a 637.

I was always in a suit and tie mode when working and found the little S&Ws were the easiest weapon to carry I ever used. Still have lots of big blasters, but the J frame is most often toted.

A tool kit

(minus a 39A ... )

BassPlayer - Lead is all I use, mostly wadctters and LSWCHP, most of them have have gas checks, a harder copper base that reduces leading to a large degree. Even the non checked one are not that bad, I think the key is to keep on top of the cleaning and don't let it get ahead of you. I am currently only shooting 20-25 rounds a week, but with my new 442 that may double, and now I have to deal with the blued steel, so you may have a point....

3ci - Welcome to the 642 Club, We are happy to have you here with us, come on in and make yourself at home...foreign lands, suit and tie mode when working, big blasters...this sounds very interesting in a cloak and dagger sort of way, any good j-frame tales to tell?

Nem - At the risk of receiving another repremand from DA, I must say that is a handsome looking family, and not one I would care to be on the wrong end of!

The princes got their looks from me as it is quite obvious their mother kept all hers.

Nem, that is one fine set of tools you have there.

Ah, but that's a wonderful thing about "genes":
they allow both parents to pass along
a predisposition for fine traits
while keeping a copy. ;)

Q: Which fits better in gene pockets:
round or square Mika? :D

Nem, that is one fine set of tools you have there.
Why thanks, FiVe. :)

As I recall, you have two of those.

Shot that .30-30 lately?

fiVe - If you look in the dictionary you will see the above quote listed as an example for the term "suck-up" :D

Nem - Perhaps bayonet lugs on those lever guns for the KA-BAR?

Holiday Spirit 642 Style

Tool kit is in peak form there Nem. Ka-Bar...I think I need to add one of those to my collection, something with some backbone to go along with my Navy MKII.

Used the early morning Florida light to get some Holiday 642 shots for your viewing pleasure.

Enjoy and may peace and prosperity be with you.
