Hello 642 clubbers.
Been a looooong time since I last posted here. But I thought it fitting that post # 1,000 should be here amongst my fellow 642-aholics
. I must say though that I am saddened to see The 642 Club "retired". I guess there was a good reason for it, maybe I'll have time to go back and read the earlier posts some time.
Life has been busy, both work and home. Our office of 5 people went down to 4 when a good friend accepted a new job. Been working loads of comp-time since, but it is getting better now.
While that was going on, my wife decided it would be an excellent time to pack up and move into a bigger house
. Though we moved a staggering distance of about .3 miles
, it stinks uprooting all the same. Won't do that again for a while. As a side note, it was all worth it in the end - it just wasn't fun doing it. Took my little boy about a month to adjust to his new home.
As for my 642, well, she's riding in my pocket as I right this. I've only been to the range twice since July 7
, which was the last time I have shot the little pocket protector. By comparison, I used to get out every 2 to 4 weeks. Hopefully, I can do 4 to 6 weeks now and eventually get back into my old routine.
Edited to add: On the cool stuff side, my dad did receive and interesting family heirloom from his father-in law. My grandfather worked for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) back in the 60s and early 70s. He traveled frequently, including several times to Saigon in the late 60s and early 70s to set up a field office there. Before leave for the final time in April '74, the South Vietnamese government presented him with a Chinese T-56 SKS in 7.62 x 39 mm Soviet. It had been captured from a NVA soldier a few years earlier. When he got it home, my grandfather stuck it in a closet and that was where it sat for more than 30 years. My dad and I cleaned up all the cosmoline and took it to a gunsmith who stated that it probably had never been fired. Score! Anyway, we took it out shooting for the first time last weekend. What a fun, sweet shooting gun! Accurate too, even with the crappy rear sight.
This SKS is my dad's first venture into the wonderful world of the 2nd Amendment and gun ownership. Lets just say he is having a "blast". His tastes appear most similar to those of Sir Nem, as he is itching for a Uberti replica of the Winchester 1873 in 45 Colt.
Now I've just got to get him interested in a S&W 442!
BTW fiVe, I saw a picture of your latest S&W acquisition, a Model 36 on another thread. Congrats, that is one fine blued beauty. Hope you are doing better.
