pdevi, CLP will not hurt your blueing.

As for all the "stuff" you put in your first post, it looks like some html coding that got mis-entered. Your second post was fine, so unless it happens again, blame Microsoft and drive on. :D

I really haven't got a handle on the type of cleaning product to use for the 642. I have been all over the internet and it seems to me that many (myself included) have used ammonia based products without any noticeable damage to the finish - yet others have ruined the finish in no time. It also seems to me that if a product chemically removes lead and copper it would be harsh enough to remove a plastic coating. Even a bottle of Bore Scrubber 2 in 1 says it will remove plastic. I've used that on the 642 along with a nylon brush. I won't do that again. I suppose that it if we use a non-ammonia, synthetic based cleaner we will have to put more elbow grease into it because the products are not as good at removing lead, copper, and carbon. That's the price we pay for having a lighter firearm.

Today I bought a can of Gun Scrubber. Maybe I'm buying into the advertisement on the can which reads: "GUN SCRUBBER Synthetic Safe Cleaner cleans fast and will not harm plastic, wood, laminates, composites, rubber grips or any other material used in the construction of today's firearms. Even camo finishes are completely safe when you choose GUN SCRUBBER Synthetic Safe Cleaner." Sounds good to me if true. I'm going to see if it works good enough at cleaning the inside of the barrel and cylinder. I don't see how anyone can avoid getting solvent on the outside of a gun when cleaning. I'm sloppy I guess.

BTW - In answer to a prior post, I've fired about 200 rounds of Fiocchi .38 through the 642 with zero problems. I think it's pretty good ammo for practice. I use Federal .38 +p for my PD rounds though.

I also have fired about 200 rounds of Fiocchi 38 spc. FMJ through my 642. I have had no problems but use it only for practice ammo. I carry Gold Dot 135+P for my SD ammo.
For cleaning I use G96 Gun Treatment, to both clean and lube the weapon. It has worked well for me and has had no ill effect on the clear coat finish.

New 442

Bought myself a 442 today - local dealer had a LNIB at a decent price, so I figured, "Why not?" Haven't had a chance to shoot it yet - maybe tomorrow if the weather holds.

I have an OWB Ray's Shadow (that I use for my model 36) that will work for this gun 'til I figure out where I want to carry it. It's a perfect fit in the front pocket of my Wranglers, so maybe I need a pocket holster of some sort to keep the lint out of it.

Got to replace those UM rubber boot grips soon, though. Not enough there for my skinny fingers to hold on to. There are lots of grips to choose from, so I should have a good time buying and replacing grips until I find the "right" set.

I'll be reading historical posts to learn what I can learn. Will also be checking in here from time to time.

Oh yeah, here's my new toy - looks just like most every other 442-2.

642 cleaning

The more I look into this, I think that since the cyl & bore are SS, if you are careful, you can use a more aggressive cleaner on the bore and cyl only. Get it done and get it off, then use something milder on the alloy / grips etc...oil it and put it back into service....
agree?

I have to say that I really do like the gun scrubber spray. I tried some tonight and it was easy to use and I didn't have to use very much. The gun is as clean as a pin inside and out. The grips are now nice and tacky except the cleaner dissolved the adhesive from the duct tape I used to cover the CT laser hole. The tape just fell off. I went against my own best judgment and didn't remove the grips or plug the hole. That laser is harder to clean than the gun.

Happy Thanksgiving to ALL

pdevi, skeezix - Welcome to the 642 Club. Good to have you here.

We are flying to Mom and Dad's in the morning for thanksgiving so I'll be absent from the clubhouse for a week or so. As my 642 is locked up and packed in the bags, I am forced to select another carry gun for the remainder of this evening and the trip to the airport tomorrow. I chose the Detonics .45 Auto. I am carrying it now as I type this and have some interesting observations:

It is HEAVY...as it has been some time since this was out of the safe I did a quick manual of arms and some immediate action drills. Safety check, mag check, action/slide check, take-down check, simulate stoppage reduction, FTF/F, FTE etc. It all comes back immediately but I feel uneasy, so much to think about, so much to go wrong... Out to the shop and seven rounds into the sand trap...It is flawless, minimal recoil, not as loud as the 642 and less muzzle blast...6+1, major caliber, 100% reliable......and I really miss the 642 and cannot wait until I get to the rental car and have it back in it's Mika and in my pocket where it belongs....and as soon as I get back the excellent, reliable, major caliber Detonics...goes back into the safe. :D

I received the SmartCarry a few days ago and have used it around the house and on one trip to the mall/home depot. It is quite interesting and should prove quite useful for some applications, full report to follow...

JT, we'll miss you here. Have a great trip, and stay safe.
(And I hope your flight doesn't go through Chicago ... )

I ditto Nems best wishes for safe travel.

I Still Just can't get into that having a holster/device that aims the business end of a handgun at my business end. The 642 looks right at home in that and I am looking forward to your commentary.

Speaking of Chicago. I have to fly there next week, then a weekend in Portage, MI to visit my 80s something folks and fly back to K'Ville. I have never checked a handgun in my checked bags for fear of it being stolen. Is this justified?? I check a Stun Pen and knife. I now don't feel comfortable traveling and being w/o more substantial personal protection. :scrutiny:

What's the deal with the Smart Carry ? Do you just wear it like a fanny pack but in front and put your shirt over it ?
Also, where does everybody buy their Breakfree CLP ? I had a big can of it a few years ago but I checked WalMart and Academy and both only had the 4 oz for about $4. I want the big can.

All SmartCarry questions can be answered here (including videos):

SmartCarryInfo

I was mistaken when I posted my 642 fits the SmartCarry I bought for my G26. A G26 fits the "medium" SmartCarry, while the 642 uses the "small" size.

So, I took a needle and thread last night and just tightened up the pocket to fit the smaller outline of the 642. Took about 10 minutes.

Another misconception repeated in this thread is the SmartCarry points your gun at your package. It does not. It's worn to one side or the other and points DOWN and OVER when standing.

However, the injury risk from an accidental discharge does exist to some degree, and when sitting the barrel points along the top or inside of the thigh which means a femoral artery rupture could be life threatening.

It is somewhat of a "last resort" option for those who require deep cover carry. That's my situation, and it's working very well for that purpose.

Hello 642 clubbers.

Been a looooong time since I last posted here. But I thought it fitting that post # 1,000 should be here amongst my fellow 642-aholics :p. I must say though that I am saddened to see The 642 Club "retired". I guess there was a good reason for it, maybe I'll have time to go back and read the earlier posts some time.

Life has been busy, both work and home. Our office of 5 people went down to 4 when a good friend accepted a new job. Been working loads of comp-time since, but it is getting better now.

While that was going on, my wife decided it would be an excellent time to pack up and move into a bigger house :scrutiny:. Though we moved a staggering distance of about .3 miles :D, it stinks uprooting all the same. Won't do that again for a while. As a side note, it was all worth it in the end - it just wasn't fun doing it. Took my little boy about a month to adjust to his new home.

As for my 642, well, she's riding in my pocket as I right this. I've only been to the range twice since July 7 :(, which was the last time I have shot the little pocket protector. By comparison, I used to get out every 2 to 4 weeks. Hopefully, I can do 4 to 6 weeks now and eventually get back into my old routine.

Edited to add: On the cool stuff side, my dad did receive and interesting family heirloom from his father-in law. My grandfather worked for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) back in the 60s and early 70s. He traveled frequently, including several times to Saigon in the late 60s and early 70s to set up a field office there. Before leave for the final time in April '74, the South Vietnamese government presented him with a Chinese T-56 SKS in 7.62 x 39 mm Soviet. It had been captured from a NVA soldier a few years earlier. When he got it home, my grandfather stuck it in a closet and that was where it sat for more than 30 years. My dad and I cleaned up all the cosmoline and took it to a gunsmith who stated that it probably had never been fired. Score! Anyway, we took it out shooting for the first time last weekend. What a fun, sweet shooting gun! Accurate too, even with the crappy rear sight.

This SKS is my dad's first venture into the wonderful world of the 2nd Amendment and gun ownership. Lets just say he is having a "blast". His tastes appear most similar to those of Sir Nem, as he is itching for a Uberti replica of the Winchester 1873 in 45 Colt. ;) Now I've just got to get him interested in a S&W 442!

BTW fiVe, I saw a picture of your latest S&W acquisition, a Model 36 on another thread. Congrats, that is one fine blued beauty. Hope you are doing better.

Thanks for stopping by and letting us know what's going down.

The SKS story is great.
itching for a Uberti replica of the Winchester 1873 in 45 Colt
Awesome choice. Then he needs a .45 revolver to "cowboy" up. Or a 19ll.

Congrats on the 1K thread count.

Moving is never fun. The only upside, unloading the "stuff" that hasn't been touched since the last move. The old heave ho.
We will be going through it in May/June this year.

BassPlayer-

Thanks for your take on the SC. That's a good assessment.
It is somewhat of a "last resort" option for those who require deep cover carry.

Waldo Pepper - I would recommend a good pocket holster, It makes a big difference in gun presentation and protection. The recommendation is of course for a Mika round cut.
I liked the looks of the holster, but ordered the square cut instead. Thought it would not print as easy and stay put in my pocket better then the round cut. Thanks for the suggestion of Mika, it had been recommended to me by several other folks on S&W forum. Anyway the $21.95 investment has been made and hopefully it will arrive before Christmas rush.

JAD!! Welcome back!!

I'm very pleased with my Chief's Special. It is apparently one of the last manufactured with a pinned barrel and I got a good deal.

I am doing well--my stones have "gone dormant"--but round 2 is next Thursday, the 29th, for hernia repair.

Part 1's size was getting to be a maintenance issue. I'm very thankful they created part 2 for us.

(And to stay on topic, I'm still liking/carrying my 642!)

Welcome back, Dr. Jad.

Dang, dude, we were just about to
put out a missing person report.

Glad you're back.
Yeah, moving sucks, no doubt.

Moving into the new club house was challenging,
but overall it went pretty darn smoothly.
What'da'ya think of the new digs?

Uberti replica of the Winchester 1873 in 45 Colt.

Nice. I've heard good things about Uberti's.

Speaking only for myself,
go for a Marlin 1895 in .45-70.
Bigger bang for the buck and bear.

______________

Great to see you back in da' house.

Keep that x42 warm.

Like Lennon/McCartney sang,
happiness is a warm gun.

Nem, who's just getting off work,
with no days off in the last 4 months.
Tired? Darn right I'm tired.

Hey, look, it's Thanksgiving!
And, I have to work ...

But I'm thankful for a roof,
and some food, even if no turkey
(let alone dressing with extra sage).

But I've got an x42.

{Added by edit: I decided to take out the Beatle lyrics for now. They just didn't quite fit the Thanksgiving ambiance. I'll pull them back out on another day in another post about guns made warm by location of carry and by series of double-taps.

I also got a little rest last night. Gonna take a few hours to run over to the park for some uncharacteristically warm, bright spring-like sunshine (this time of year is normally quite cold and rainy here), then come back and get some work done. (Sadly, it is just necessary at the moment - sometimes work just can't wait - but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel ... and hoping it's not a train. :scrutiny: )

I've got a few other things to share about Thanksgiving as well, but I'll save those for later ...}

I've been lurking around reading Part one and part 2 to this point. What I read convinced me to purchase a used 642 as a companion to my 640. I wanted to thank you all for the good information you have included here, it really helped in the process. I'd like to join in on the discussions now, hope that's OK.

Thanks,

velcro8ball and all new 642 Heads - Welcome! Feel free to jump right on in (the water's always warm here.) ;)

Another first THR post at the 642 Club - SIMPLY FANTASTIC!

BTW - You couldn't ask for a better place for 642 OR 442 info, even if you had to pay for it.

A Happy Thanksgiving to all from the ranch!
