642 Club Part Deux

Opened up my 637 and couldn't see what might be causing weak primer strikes. All the parts look clean and well cut. The hammer spring is nice and stiff.

I've heard that some people put a bit of orange paint on the sight. I'd like to do this too. What kind of paint should I use?

I did a search with no luck, so I'll just ask, I just got (2) 50 round boxes of Blazer 158 GR lead Round Nose, anyone tryed this stuff, how dirty should I expect my 642 to be with all that exposed lead :uhoh: , I figured I would try it, seeing it was $12.99 a box-o-Fifty at Dunhams, think it will hit the paper? Im still waiting patiently for my Mika

Hmm. 11:42 pm on a Friday night.

The night watch is late ... again ... :scrutiny:

Good thing I'm wearing my x42.

I joined the club a while back but I haven't had a chance to take my 642 to the range yet.
I did recently receive some A-Zoom snap caps, 3 Safariland speedloaders and a Hogue monogrip.
Having big hands, the monogrip was just what I needed.
Plus, it does not interfere with the speedloader (the original grips did:uhoh:).
I have dry-fired over 2000 now.
I just put a 2" black dot on the lampshade and stand about 7 paces away.
I alternate between the left and right hands.
I want to be able to shoot accurately with either hand.
It was amazing to me how much weaker and uncoordinated my left hand is compared to my right!
I think with enough dry-fire practice I can build some "muscle" as well as "muscle memory".:D

Woody, that Blazer 158gr lead is what the .38 Special was designed around. Don't worry, it will hit the target. I load 158gr lead bullets all the time, they are fine.

Night shift, checking in ...

Welcome to the new folks. Hang out. Fridge with drinks is in the other room to the left.

JIM, glad to know I'm not alone in having the Hogue MG on my critter.
In my case, I just like the extra control offered by the grip even though I have smaller hands than average.

A few years ago, I would have said the same. But I've realized in the last two years, in part when shooting revolvers, that I do pretty well shooting with my left hand, in fact, way better than I expected I would. (I cannot, however, shoot a long gun left handed. Just can't do it.)

Curiously enough, even though I'm right handed, I'm left eye dominant, and I think that my left hand grip is stronger. Actually, the same applies for doing things like barbell curls: I can consistently do more left handed with the same weight than with my right.

I'm betting if I practiced more consistently, I might be carrying my x42 on the left side.

Hey, I dont know if you guys had heard about this story in December but, here in Florida (West Palm Beach) there was a guy driving his work flat bed and two guys, due to road rage came out and started shouting racial slurs. The two men also had a knife and were trying to open his door. The man in the flat bed has a Concealed Carry permit and pulled out a 9mm and shot both men. One of them died in the hospital and the other will possibly face murder charges because he was holding the knife and threatning the man in the flat bed which caused him to defend himself, thus killing one of the two attackers. Thank God for the Florida stand your ground law.

Welcome

bps, TBG, and thanks for stopping in again J.I.M.

Strong hands play a key role in controlling the X42 there is no doubt.

bps3040, thebaldguy - Welcome to the 642 Club. Come on in and stay for awhile.

bdjansen - We have seen this before, a few FTF's and then it goes away, you can't rely on it though. Fire as many rounds as you can and see what happens then send it back. For a CCW you must be confident it will work. Were the FTF's all at once or were they spread out? As for sight paint, I think most folks use nail polish.

J.I.M. - Get it dirty!

I joined the 642 Club today I have been looking to get a 642 for 2 years now. But the price here in Texas was runnning 420.00 - 435.00 and at gun shows it was $ 400.00 and the vendors where rud! I found a 642-2 at a pawn shop for 365.00 new in the box and jumped at it.

Thanks for all the great info.

delowry - Welcome to the 642 Club. Congrats on the find, $365.00 NIB is an excellent price. Be sure to let us know how it works for you.

Maia007, Pfunk -Welcome to the 642 Club. Good to have you with us.

...circa 1995 Mod 442 nickel...:cool::cool:

Is the only difference between the 442/642 the finish?

Well, as Pfunk says, yes + the Current 442 has a Carbon steel barrel and cylinder that are blued (blacked) and a Black anodized aluminum frame without a clearcoat.

The Current 642 has a matte finish Stainless steel barrel and cylinder with a satin anodized aluminum frame, with the frame clearcoated.

The barrel markings are also different and the front sight is slightly different.

New 442

Brand new owner of a 38 spl +p 442.

Bought a Galco ambidextrious horsehide pocket holster $39.99 and Blackhawk #3 pocket holster. Also have a Mika round pocket holster on order..aprox 25$.

----going to return the Galco. not as comfortable as the 12$ blackhawk #3 pocket holster. Also I have to pull it to the top of my pocket to draw while the Blackhawk is slightly sticky and stays put when i draw.

Grips on order: Hogue S&W J Frame Round Butt Nylon Monogrip.

Shot 150 rounds through it.. standard and +p loads.

Happy hunting,

Joe Stokes.

joestokes - Welcome to the 642 club. Come on in! I agree about the Galco horsehide holster, it's very well made, but will not stay put and I had to push off mine to make it work. I have not tried the Blackhawk, but I have their speed classic and I like it. The Mika will probably be the last one you have to buy, it's the best I have found.

I have both the Hogue Bantam and Monogrip in rubber, and they are both good, let us know how you like the Nylon Monogrip.

642

Found an almost new (20 fired rounds) 642 at our local range/gun store - $319!!! Now my new carry guy, have retired my Taurus 85. Just waiting for the Crimson Trace Laser Grips to come in!! Must say, it feels much better in my concealed carry purse!:D

The nickel 442 appears to be a better finish than the newer finish on the 642. The nickel 442 has been carried off and on in a fanny pack for 12-13 years and still looks great. I don't see the newer 642 finish holding up as well over time.

Well after a year of almost daily carry, I carried my 642 for a while, my 442 is starting to show the slightest holster wear on the front sight. It is carried in a DeSantis Nemisis holster and removed at night.

I think black guns look better, have more character, with a little wear.

Wow almost 1,600 posts already.

Amazing

Just ducking in briefly during a brutal week at work.
Not much relief in sight for the next one. :uhoh:
But if I can make it through April, May looks better.

Good to know things are good here.
Welcome to all the new members.

Had an interesting discussion with a friendly neighbor (a next door business buddy) today who is also a gun owner (deer rifle, not SD). He said he was thinking about getting a handgun for SD since our neighborhood is a bit ... how you say, squirrelly.

I told him that I've been carrying my SW .38 spl at work every day for a couple of years.

"Really?", he said? "I never knew."

"Yeah", I said. "Unlikely I'll ever need it, but around here, you never know. And it gives me peace of mind."

"Hmm", he says.

I may have planted a seed there.

minipearl - Welcome to the 642 Clubhouse, we're pleased to have you. Great deal you got on that little monster, hope it serves you well. The Taurus is OK, but you did good getting an X42.

Maia007 - The nickel is a very durable finish, you may be surprised at the 642 however, as they hold up quite well and S&W will refinish the clearcoat for you if need be, upon request.

glockman19 - It's funny, but I seem to like the 442 better when I was carrying it, and the 642 better when I was carrying it, so now I just carry them both

...I may have planted a seed there...
