Hey everyone! I just wanted to check in since I don't think I've posted in "The Club" for many months. It was The Club that first got me off the fence and down to the gun shop to buy a 642 instead of blowing it with a Kel-Tec.

I don't get out to shoot nearly as often as I'd like, but I went this last weekend. I was all alone in a gravel pit deep in State Forest land. Of course, I took along my 642. I put 50 rounds of Remington UMC 130-grain FMJ through it at paper targets from 5 to 10 yards. After some warming up, I thought it would be beneficial to practice some "fast-draw" out of my pocket holster. When I pocket carry this gun, it's in an Uncle Mike's in my right front pocket. So with my back to the target, at a distance of 5 yards, I spun to face the target, reached in my pocket and drew as fast as possible, lowered to a wide, secure stance and fired 2 quick COM shots plus a quick follow-up at eye-level. I did this exercise a few times, and even tried quickly backing up while keeping square to the target and firing. It took some practice to get a secure grip on the gun between the grab from the pocket holster and the trigger pull, but I was relatively satisfied with my shots. With a ton of practice, I think muscle memory would make this or a similar exercise pretty effective.

I've been entertaining the idea of a Ruger LCP for ultra-light pocket carry since I'm not totally comfortable yet with the weight and bulk of a revolver in my front pocket, but everytime it crosses my mind, I eventually come to my senses and I convince myself to just become an expert with my 642 and that if I carry it enough, I'll stop noticing it's bulky shape in my pocket.

Anyway, I am still a devoted fan of the 642 and I know it will be good to me if I give it enough attention.:)

...since I'm not totally comfortable yet with the weight and bulk of a revolver in my front pocket

It certainly depends on the person, but I carry my 442 in either my front or back pocket everyday. After a week or so its a comforting lump, after that it's no more noticable than your wallet. In fact, it took me longer to get used to my wallet being in the other side than it did the revolver.

As for my 442 experience, I'm having a bit of an issue. With +P rounds, I'm punching 8 inches high at 5 yards. I tried a slower round, the Georgia Arms instead of the Remmington, and it's about the same story. I'm assuming that this isn't normal. Altering the front sight has been mentioned to me (replacing it? am I wrong, or wouldn't filing the sight cause the barrel to aim higher?), but I'm not quite willing to maim my revolver just yet.

Anyone got any ideas?

Learning to shoot the 642

Howdy everyone,
I'm a new 642 owner...love it. The one questions I have is .... How the H...L do you aim this thing?????? I have gone through a bunch of rounds and can't hit the broad side of a barn....I am thinking of buying the Crimson laser grips but wanted to hear from others first. I just do not see an point to line up on....

No Lock 642's Sighted

I was not able to make it to the gun show in Chantilly (Dulles), Virginia, last weekend, but a neighbor did. He told me today that Trader Jerry's had three brand new no-lock 642's on the table, priced just under $300.

Such a deal!.

I have no idea if they all sold, but any Virginian interested might want to give Jerry a call.

Is 445 too much for a 642 no lock?

I am usually too inpetuous and don't wait long enough. I don't want to miss out on the no-locks. I have not had any luch at all finding a pre-lock. A dealer near me offers them for 445 plus tax. Is this too much? Thanks.

Based on my recent shopping, your neighbor might have been pulling your leg. Under $300 would be a fantastic deal. Best price I've seen on a no-lock 642 is $399. I paid $409 plus tax for mine.

I heard one of the sporting goods stores ran a sale at $349 for the ones with the lock.

Do you have to own a 642 to post to this thread

I only ask because I own a model 649-3 which is a .357 magnum snubnose with the shrouded hammer. I actually added the crimson trace grips as it is a ccw and I think most fights will happen without the ability to use sights anyhow. It is actually probably my favorite gun even over my Glock G34 competition grade 9mm.

As you may have noticed I am very new to this forum as this is my first posting

Howdy rbg:

These small guns aren't the easiest to shoot! I highly recommend two things:

1. Use 148gr wadcutter ammo for practice (and some use it for defense).

2. Find a good local gunsmith (or send it to S&W) and have him slick up the trigger action.

With both of those changes, I think you will see tremendous improvement with your ability to hit the target.

I like to have my guns be presentable in polite company, so I usually slap on a nice set of Rosewood Badgergrips. Did this with the 642. Big mistake! Fired about 60 rounds of various sizes and makes of ammo (all non +P) through it at the club the other day. The web of my right hand is just now getting to have feeling again! I have put the ugly black rubber grips back on . I'm using the grips that came on my model 60, (it sports the Rosewood now) as they cover the backstrap. I'll try it again in two weeks. I fire every two Wednesdays (social security check day, so I don't forget). I' m ordering some 148 grain HBWC and see if that helps. My 640 and the 60 do fine with all of the Non +P ammo and rosewood grips but they are considerably heavier. I still love the gun (so easy to carry), just need to tune grips and ammo. As the 642 in the pocket will be my primary summer EDC, I need to set it up. The longer grip is not a problem as I am having all of my jeans and Haggars modified by my seamstress with deeper reinforced right front pockets. My cargo shorts are all deep pocket and have been reinforced.

Is $400.00 a fair price for a new Model 642 Airweight? My local dealer has one marked at $450.00 but told me I could take it home for $400. I really want the airweight because this gun will be pocket carried for 11 to 16 hours at a time. Thanks in advance.

Just checkin back in. I haven't posted here in a while.

marksman13, $400 is a pretty good price. I'd jump on it. Does it have the ILS or is it a no lock version.

Most recent range report:
I went to the range last weekend and ran about 25 rounds of 125+p through the 642. The recoil was even more drastic that running full house .357 125gr loads through my Colt MKIII snubby. Of course the snubby weighs alot more than the 642;)

It has the ILS. Dealer also has a 642 with Crimson Trace marked at $700. Told it could leave the store for $650. I dont see a real need for the Crimson Trace though.

My 442 is the first firearm I've ever owned, am I cleaning it right?

1. Unload :)
2. Remove expensive lazor.
3. Remove font-most screw and disassemble into 3 parts: cylinder, crane arm, and... everything else.
4. Apply expensive name brand secret formula gun cleaner.
5. Scrub everywhere, including inside the barrel and cylinder chambers and under the extractor star with nylon brush.
6. Use patented gun cleaning precision metal poles that screw together to pull some wipes through until they stop looking dirty.
7. Drip tactical lubricant down barrel and cylinder chambers, and thin out by pulling a few more wipes through.
8. Put a dot or two of gun grease on moving contact points (I used a toothpick to spread out a minuscule amount on the parts that need to, um, revolve.)
9. Reassemble carefully and wipe down with an old t-shirt.
10. Attach grips.
11. Load snap caps and perform function check.
12. Submit to internet forum for analysis.

Like I said, this is my first firearm I've ever owned, and the only people in my extended family with any firearms interest live in another state.

Hey guys. Its been quite a while since Ive been on here. My son was with me for the summer and I wanted to dedicate every minute with him. Hes gona back to his moms house now and I miss him terribly.

Update on me: Wednesday was officially my last day in the Army. I am no officially retired and one again a Mister. Lets see what the next chapter in my life has in store for me.

Well my question for today is. Does anyone know where I would be able to buy .38 brass with primers. Im wanting to finally get into practicing with the wax bullets and Ive already got a location on where I can get those. But the brass w/ primers is a bit harder to find at a good price. Any suggestions?

well...I just ordered a new 642-1 no ILS! Should be in by next week. I can't wait! You all and this thread made me get one!!!

re:presidente006

Why don't you just prime your own? Go to www.midwayusa.com and buy the unprimed brass ($15 for 100 Remington 38 Special) in whatever quantity you want and buy a Lee Auto Prime Hand Priming Tool ($12.99). Lee quality can't be beat at even 3 times the price. Then go to a local Sporting Goods store and buy a few boxes of small pistol primers (CCI box of 1000/$28) and prime your own brass. The brass can be used over and over especially if you aren't using powder. Priming is real easy. You could prime at least 100 cases every 30 minutes with the Lee Hand Primer.

Just a thought!

I'm Old Gregg!
