Shootist/angel1216

Shootist, I really like the looks of the CIA grips on the 642. I have several revolvers but none with wood grips. The polished wood looks like it would be slick to handle but I've never tried them out. Very dressy though. I have the Safariland speed loaders too. Love 'em. Very fast and reliable plus the work well with the CT grips on my 642.

angel1216, nice collection. I might keep an auto around though. Snubbies are great but autos have a place in your arsenal too. I keep my Sig P239 out at home for visitors and carry it for CW in the winter when I dress heavier. More rounds just makes more sense when it is convenient. Just curious, is that a door breech choke on the Mossberg?

Sir Gregg,
Thanks! you're right sir. I thought about it all of last week! I will keep my glock. and yes it is the door breech.

Another Range Report

Rainy Saturday morning sent me along with a bunch of others over to the NRA for some indoor shooting. Arrived about 9:30 and waited 15-20 minutes for a lane.
Did about 35 minutes of .22LR from a Heritage Rough Rider SA and a Hi-Standard 103 Citation. Those are just plain fun guns to shoot.

Switched over to .38, first with a S&W 66, and then with the 642. I have to admit, the 66 is spoiling me. Easier to hold and less kick than the 642. The comparison was worse because the initial cylinder of 5 was the SJHP +P that had been riding in my pocket. Dang, those things are loud! Finished off with a few targets of regular loads, then replaced the +P for return to the Mika in my pocket.

When I left around 11:00, the wait had gone up approaching an hour.
Another fun morning. Next trip will be with the wife, again.

How does the door breech choke affect the pattern of the shot spread? I know that the door breech concentrates the shot to take out deadbolts and hinges and such but does the shot spread normally in other circumstances? How about slugs? Does it affect them at all?

It really looks mean on the end of the barrel though.

Glad to hear you are keeping the Glock. Save your pennies and get the S&W too! To many guns, so little time:D

Ain't they beautiful pieces?

Mine's a 65, but they're brothers of the 66 with fixed sights.

Love mine, even though it's been at my smith's for a long time. He put a new hammer spring in it, but I've been too busy (and poor :uhoh: ) to pick it up.

It's safe in his safe, but I miss it a lot. :(

At least my mule, Robin, is here to keep me company, but I think even he misses Batman.

I was wondering if someone could point me to a good holster for cross-draw carry. Pocket carry is great but i spend alot of time in my truck. OWB is what i am thinking about. Would it just be easier to pocket carry and remove it when in my truck and get a seat holster?
Anyway, if anyone knows a good canted/fully horizontal crossdraw holster for my 442 that would be alot of help.
thanks

old gregg,
It will accept rifle slugs, It will give you a wider pattern , It is excellent for 20 to 35yards but pattern may be too thin at long range.
it does look mean and sharp! (literally)....

Back in the clubhouse!!! After spending the last three months [strike]babysitting[/strike] “accompanying” a group of [strike]clueless crybabies[/strike] “policy makers” to various garden spots in and around the current theaters and beyond I am truly relived to be back in the USA. I met some really good folks and some really bad ones, had some good times and some really bad times, but in the end we came out ahead and all of our charges are now safely back where they started from and I can sleep soundly knowing they will, as usual, make all the right decisions in our behalf …on the upside I was reunited with an excellent team of experienced professionals, many that I have not seen in years, and that made it all worthwhile. Now if I can just remember that thing about volunteering…

OK, now on to the important stuff, I see we have a lot of new faces here in the clubhouse, and that is good, so welcome to:

As I read I see many issues to address and I will be playing catch-up for a few days and trying to get back into the loop. For now I am quite pleased to be home with my X42’s and back among all the fine folks of the 642 Club and THR.

Dry fire

Is it okay to Dry fire My New 442 to smooth up the trigger pull some or do u have to use snap caps or something like that. About How many dry firings does it take to reduce the pull somewhat thanks for any info.

hey, I added an actual 642-1 to my 637 (which I am now trying to get rid of...) So I'm officially an official member ;)

Nem, G-Man, fiVe - Thanks, I am really happy to be back :)

hoghead - Good to hear from you again. As for the dry fire, it is a good thing and while it will not "reduce" the trigger pull weight, it will smooth it out quite nicely after around 500 to 1000 times. Here's the snap cap deal:

Old Fuff said:
The problem with dry firing without something in the chambers (fired cases, snap-caps, etc.) is that if the primer doesn't stop the firing pin and soften the blow, something else in the system will have to. In older S&W revolvers it was the hammer hitting the frame, when the “hammer nose” (firing pin) was attached to the hammer. As I’m sure all of you know, in the model 642 and similar the firing pin is mounted in the frame, and its retracted by a small spring, that you do not want to mash.

While damage may be improbable, it is far from impossible, and in a defensive weapon the Old Fuff has enough to worry about, without giving Mr. Murphy any extra help. Snap caps may or may not be necessary, but they are excellent, and inexpensive, insurance.

In addition the snap caps are great for reloading pratice, individually, and with speed strips and speed loaders.

Rugerlvr - Instead of getting rid of the 637, you should find a 638 to complete the collection :D

I'm actually trying to trade it for a Ruger SP101 .357 snubby. Gotta keep up with my moniker. ;)

JT, welcome back.

I currently have an ankle holster and an OTW holster. My problem sometimes is that I might be wearing boots and the shirt Im wearing isnt enough to drape over the 642. What other options can you guys suggest. Obviously I can go with an ITW holster but I dont know which ones are the most comfortable with an easy draw. I also want to know if there are any other options besides the old fanny pack. Thanks in advance guys

presidente006 - You didn't mention pocket carry. While it is slow while seated, in all other situations it excels with the X42's and the right holster, my favorites:

The Smart Carry is incredibility versatile and while a bit slow it works great with elastic or beltless pants and is probably the most comfortable holster I have ever used. This one tends to work when nothing else will.

I carry 24/7 and most of the time for the X42's it's the pocket holster while out and about and the Smartcarry when at home. I am still addressing the driving holster and now I have the time to finish my desgin and it's close to completion.

Rugerlvr, I'll take that 637 off your hands... how does $100 sound? ;)

I keep coming back to this thread and drooling over all these great Airweights. I have made myself a promise that one day I will purchase a 442 or 642... but I can't spare the cash right now. I was offered a good sum for the Model 60 you see here, but I can't bring myself to part with this fairly early production M60, even though I could have a 442 or 642 tomorrow if I did sell it. The Model 37 in the back is my wife's carry gun. It's a late-50s vintage flat latch. I guess together they sort of make for a quasi-grandparent of the modern Airweights. One day I will be a legitimate member, though. Until then, keep showing us the great pics. Love those carry options, jt1. I will be picking up a Nemesis soon.
