JT, I forgot to mention the pocket carry. Ive thought about that but personally Im not to hyped up about it. I usually have too much junk in my pockets and it probably wouldnt help me much.

BUT...I do love the smart carry you got there. That is amazing. Looks really comfortable and its a great idea. Im gonna go ahead and search around and maybe ill get myself one. Thanks for the help brother

interesting... to say the least...

DA - Great to be back in the clubhouse...interesting...indeed...

tilden - :)

Shade00 - I think you are making wise decisions, that M60 and flatlatch look like old friends. The X42's are readily available and I'm sure one is in your future...

presidente006 - The thing about pocket carry is that you can stick your hand in you pocket without anyone taking notice at all as it is such a natural movement, and have a full combat grip while still maintaining complete concealment. Combined with proper situational awareness this offers a significant advantage over most other modes of carry.

The Smartcarry is highly recommended, if you go to the website be advised they have several models and the site is somewhat difficult to navigate. Here's my initial review:

1/7GRUNT--

I looked at www.dillonprecision.com and www.kdholsters.com. Also, you might want to look at www.desantisholster.com; they offer more items than you can imagine. I have several snubs which guard the safe. But the 642 airweight, the 442 and the Taurus 851 are routinely rotated and carried in the car and/or pocket. I ended up using Nemesis and Mika pocket holsters. I tried a shoulder holster, OWB, IWB...nothing seemed to fit whether I was standing or sitting. Good luck.

JT, Good point brother. Ill look into both and will post with my decision.

BTW. I will be buying an AR-15 here soon. Im really stoked about it and cant wait to take my new toy to the range. Will post pics of it when I get it. Along with the plans on what modifications I will be making. I know that this is the 642 thread but an AR-15 is a beautiful thing to have and share with people that can appreciate it.

uriel - 442/642/851, you are more than qualified for admission...Welcome to the 642 Club.

presidente006 - AR-15...me too, but CAR-15...keep us posted!

For those interested, this is a link from another forum and is one of the most compreshive listings I have seen: The Ultimate Holster Maker list

Also, as it has not been mentioned lately, there is a great deal of forun related information at THR Library, click at the top of the page...

This is my first post as I've been lurking for a month or so trying to catch up on all posts from 2003 to date and really enjoy the wealth of information. The 642-2 (w/Crimson Trace LG-305 grips) is the first firearm (purchased May 2008) that I've owned and I love it. A very snappy shooting revolver but it can be tamed. Got my florida ccw shortly thereafter and a Mika square cut pocket holster today (finally) after a 3 month wait. I must add that the Mika was not over hyped and well worth the wait and easliy replaced the Uncle Mike's size 3 pocket holster.
Will be going to a gun show in West Palm this weekend and will be looking for a brother for the 642-2.....a 640!

Welcome to the club Johnan. You'll find more knowledge here than you thought you would. THR is filled with reprobates, er, uh, I mean representatives of all things "gun", so don't be afraid to ask questions. I love my 642 and usually have to track my wife down so I can take it to the range. Guess that means I'll have to buy one for myself.

jt1, thank you.

Speaking of asking questions, you'll never guess what I ran into yesterday. An AA Arms AP9...according to what I have read elsewhere, notorious for malfunctioning, etc. I plan on exercising it within the next week, and if I find that this example works properly, I will use it as a truck gun. In that case, I will need extra magazines...anyone know where they can be found, if at all? I checked the Numrich site and saw the pouch with six mags, but the pics don't look like what I have and I don't want to get stuck with something. I can wait for the accumulated wisdom of THR to deliver me from my confusion. Thanks.

Johnan - Welcome to the 642 Club. 642-2TC, hard to do much better than that for a CCW. Give that Mika a week to break-in and you will really start to apprecate it...brother to a 642? more like a 442, I think the 640 is more like their daddy :D. We are glad to have you with us, and happy to hear you are reading the past posts, best info available on the X42's, Let us know how the gun show goes.

uriel - These folks usualy have mag's for everything:

My primary is a 642 in a pocket holster (use several different types, all work!) during warm months. IWB with the 640 during colder months. IWB is a lot harder to hide 100% of the time and much more uncomfortable. Since I wear a sweater in colder periods, I am thinking of staying with pocket carry with the 640 and wear suspenders. All of my trousers have reinforced and deeper right front pockets by the way. Pocket carry spoils you after awhile.

soooo sorry!

Hi Guys,
I am seriously thinking of trading in my 642 for a 340. my 642 is not even a year old. you think i can get $300 for it? or is that asking for too much?

Angel 1216:
Why? 3 ounces and the opportunity to jump crimp on some .357 Magnums?

Of course, this is the 642 group, and we are partial.

My defection is the other way. I still love my 640 the best. It is in the pocket and the 642 on the ankle.

At the range today with the 640 I tried a variant of the "flinch test" described earlier in this thread. I loaded 2, a .38 special and a .357 Magnum in random positions and gave the cylinder a spin. I was disturbed to find that I tended to pull straight down a little with the first shot whether it was empty or had a .38 or a .357. I was better with the other 5. (I try to always pull the trigger 6 times to reinforce getting that 6th sight picture and follow-through.)

I kept practicing until I overcame the first round dip. It has never been a problem at dry fire, but you wouldn't expect it to be. It will be interesting to see if it recurs at the beginning of my next practice session. If so, I will keep working. If you had asked me if I ever flinched, I would have told you emphatically NO. Oops.

...Pocket carry spoils you after awhile...

wjh2657 - Absolutely, on those occasions when for what ever reason I am not carrying in my pocket when out and about and I put my hand in my pocket and do not find a Hogue bantam grip there I have a brief moment of panic until I reach back to my belt holster just to check...and that holster, while only a few inches away seems like it takes forever to reach. I found myself doing this even in the field even after months of no pocket carry...

...you think i can get $300 for it?

angel1216 - If you must sell it, I would not take any less than that for it assuming it is as good as it looks in the pic's. The 340 is is very appealing, however my feeling is:

On the Sc/Ti issue, I have been tempted by them from the beginning, but every time it comes down to buying, I end up with the X42. It's not a financial issue, I can get anything I want, but for me the X42 just has the right combination of weight, feel, and appearance. A good solid, basic, no frills gun...

But still, whenever I am holding one of the ultralites...

davidconatser - Your observations on and cures for dealing with flinching are right on target (;)) one thing I noticed early on is that a lot of this depends on the engagement technique, when conducting bullseye/aimed fire and concentrating on proper sight pictures, breathing, stance, trigger squeeze, etc, recoil anticipation is just part of the conditioning and must be controlled along with all the other factors. When conducting CQC/point engagements, especially under time/stress, none of these factors come into play as primary considerations as your sole focus is on you primary target, secondary scan, and maneuver. During most engagements I am not aware of recoil at all and judging by shot groups flinching does not seem to be a factor (this is of course quite arbitrary as groups are generally twice the spread or more of bullseye shooting, but fairly consistent) YMMV, but even so it’s probably a good thing to spread the impacts around a little as you stand a better chance of hitting something important.

Here is a good article from one of our own: http://www.corneredcat.com/Basics/flinch.aspx

Renewed member to the 642 club.
I owned one about 7 years ago. It was a 642-1. Sold it and regretted it.
By the time I came to my senses the internal locks were on them as 642-2s. I will not buy a S&W qith an internal lock.....Just me be stubborn.

Well, with the new lots of 642-1s that came out without the lock? I had to have one. Bought it yesterday. Have a busy work schedule and travel ahead and will post a report when I have a chance to shoot it.

2ndamd - Welcome to the 642 Club, we are happy to have you here and glad you found an X42 you are happy with. From what I gather there are around 4000 of these being released, are they marked as a 642-1? Also can you give us the production code number for this issue? Are any being issued as a 442?

I am no longer concerned with the lock, it is easy enough to disable if desired and to my knowledge has not been an issue on the non-Sc/Ti guns, and a very limited problem even with them. Having said that there is the cosmetic issue and the remote chance of a problem. Were I buying another one and had the choice I'm sure I would take a no lock.

While on this topic I guess a good question would be, does anyone actually use the lock?

JT1 Yeah they are marked as 642-1. Just picked mine up 2 days ago. the product code is 103810 and serial #'s starting with DCMxxxx. No, there are no 442's being made without the lock.

Esco - Thanks for the info, Good to get that data into the thread. Hope you got a good one, let us know how it works for you. No 442's...bummer...

While on this topic I guess a good question would be, does anyone actually use the lock?

I just got a new M&P 340 and as far as the lock goes I will be using it when the gun needs to be left in the car or when it is stored away. One extra level of security can be very helpful in case the gun finds itself in inexperienced hands.

XDShooter07 - Congrats on the new gun, let us know how you like it. DA seems to be doing a pretty good job of converting folks over to the ultralite camp, I wonder if he's given up on me yet :D. Your response to the lock question makes me wonder just how many folks do use the lock, maybe time for a poll...

Something that worries me with the internal lock with a Centennial is that it is not obvious that it is on or off.

If I put a padlock around the top strap, I am not likely to forget it is on. Or think it is on when it isn't.

Even with a Chiefs Special, the little flag is not very prominent.

I would sure hate to need my gun and discover it is locked. Or have my survivors discover it was locked.

If anyone does use it, do you have a routine you go through to be sure it is unlocked before you head out the door?

davidconatser - Excellent point, as I have never used the lock, I never thought about locking yourself out of your own gun, I wonder what Daniel and Horace would think about the ILS? I have posted the question on the revolver forum to get a larger sample:

ILS/Handgun lock Poll

...does anyone actually use the lock?
What lock? :scrutiny:

Sorry to be so in absentia - busy time professionally -
but good to see the club house in so many good hands.

'Cept for this rabble rouser DA
w/ his foofy little airweight M&P340's. :uhoh: :neener:

(Only joking, DA. It's all in the family.)

[strike]Good[/strike] Great to see Sir Jt back in da' house.

Would you trade no lock for lock for $50

About 5 weeks ago I purchsed a lock 642. As luck would have it I found out about a week or two later about the no lock 642. I asked the owner of the gun store what kind of a deal could I get if I wanted to trade it in. Just called me back and said he could do it for about $50 difference plus tax. ( I am assuming that he would charge me tax on the new gun so I'm guessing it would be about $30 for tax.)

So I guess the total to trade up to a no lock would be about $80. Would you do it or would you just keep the gun I have? (paid $399 plus tax for the gun I have), Thanks.

Boatman; that's the same question running thru my mind. I bought my 642 a couple months ago, but then had some surgery, and have not even fired it. Have been wondering what the dealer would want to trade for a "no lock"?
